Sept. 26, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. ? The Appalachian State men’s soccer team opened SoCon play Wednesday night by defeating defending champion UNC Greensboro 4-0 in Boone, NC. The Mountaineers found their scoring form early and often to push their record to 5-1-2 and 1-0 in the SoCon. In the loss, the Spartans fall to 4-2-2 and 0-1 in the league.

“Well I am certainly pleased,” said head coach Paul Stahlschmidt. “We’ve talked a lot with our players this year about doing the little things right and today they did just that. When the little things are done right and there is some discipline to their approach they give their talent the chance to take over. I am very proud of my team and excited for the players.”

Leading the way in goal was SoCon player of the week Greg Walters who made five saves to earn his third win of the season and fourth shutout of the season. The ASU senior is ranked fifth in the nation with a goals against average of 0.38.

With only four minutes gone, junior Juan Obregon netted his second goal of the season as senior Sean Sassano found him open in the center of the penalty area. Obregon converted the opportunity to put Appalachian up 1-0

Just three minutes later, Obregon was given an incredible 1 on 1 opportunity as senior Corey Lugger won the ball deep in UNCG’s end and dumped the ball off. Obregon didn’t require a second invitation as he let off a blistering shot past the Spartan keeper.

As the time dwindled in the first half, Appalachian looked to build the lead. On a corner kick in the 40th minute, senior Michael Walters delivered a ball into the edge of the six yard box to senior McCoy Livingston. Livingston pushed home the chance to widen the lead to 3-0 just before the intermission.

In the 49th minute, Sassano flicked a free kick off to Michael Walters who slid it past the Spartan keeper from 35 yards to seal the 4-0 win.

Appalachian was outshot by a 12-11 margin and both teams finished with eight shots on goal. 527 spectators were on hand, setting a new ASU Soccer Stadium record.

The Mountaineers will return to action this Saturday, September 29 with a non-conference showdown against Charlotte. The clash kicks off at 2:00 inside the ASU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
