#22 Washington 1, #23 Furman 0 (OT)
Seattle, Wash. -- Kevin Forrest scored at the 95:25 mark of the first overtime to lift 22nd-ranked Washington to a 1-0 victory over No. 23 Furman in the finale of the Husky Fever Classic Sunday afternoon in Seattle, Wash.
George John played a pass to Forrest’s feet in the left side of the box and the Washington forward turned and chipped a shot over the head of Paladin keeper Bryan Amos and into the far side netting to give the Huskies the win.
Furman was forced to play the final five minutes of regulation and the overtime period a man down after Rob Victor was issued a red card late in the match. Washington held a 12-8 edge in shots and recorded the only shot attempt in the overtime period despite Furman controlling most of the possession in extra time.
Washington keeper Stephen Fung registered the shutout in net while recording two saves. Bryan Amos, who allowed just the second goal against the Paladins all season, notched six saves in the loss.
Furman falls to 7-1-0 on the season while the Huskies improve to 5-2-1. The defeat snaps Furman’s season opening seven-game winning streak.
The Paladins’ Jon Leathers was named as the tournament’s defensive mvp after downing Portland 2-0 on Friday and falling to Washington on Sunday.
Furman opens Southern Conference play Saturday when it hosts Georgia Southern in a 3 p.m. contest at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Central Florida 2, Wofford 1
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A goal with just under five-and-a-half minutes was the deciding factor as host UCF knocked off Wofford, 2-1, in men's soccer action at the UCF Fall Classic Sunday afternoon in Orlando, Fla.
For the second-straight game, the Terriers headed into the lockerroom at halftime ahead 1-0. Freshman Armin Kinigadner sent a free kick into the net behind Golden Knight goalkeeper Sean Johnson for the game's first score at 43:46.
UCF (4-3-1) then rallied for a pair of goals in the second frame to claim the victory. Chris Andaur sent a serve towards Matt Luzunaris, who used his head to push it past Wofford (2-4-1) goalie Joey Taylor for the equalizer at 63:54.
The Golden Knights continued to dominate the offensive attack in the second half, outshooting the Terriers by a 16-2 margin. However, it was Ryan Roushandel's score at 84:37 following a James Georgeff assist as he was streaking inside the penalty box that provided the final score.
Overall, UCF outshot Wofford 22-10 and held a 9-5 edge on corner kicks.
Senior Kyle Walker paced the Terriers with three shots, while Roughandel led all players with seven.
Wofford will next open Southern Conference play with a pair of road matches, beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday in Statesboro, Ga., against Georgia Southern.
Stanford 2, Davidson 0
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The host Cardinal scored a pair of second half goals to defeat Davidson 2-0 in men's soccer action on the final day of the 2007 Nike Stanford Invitational at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The loss was the third straight for the Wildcats as they fall to 1-6-0 overall, while Stanford concludes its annual event with two triumphs and improves to 3-2-2 on the young campaign.
After outshooting Davidson 9-1 in the first period, Stanford's Dan Shapiro broke the scoreless tie just 4:04 into the last frame with his team-leading fourth strike of the season and third in the last two matches. Brant Bishop set up Shapiro's 49th minute header that found left corner of frame.
Stanford's Tom Montgomery netted his first goal of the season and the game's final in the 65th minute off a cross from Thiago Sa Freire.
The Cardinal controlled the shot column with an impressive 19-2 advantage. The Wildcats' Robby Goldsberry stopped a game-high six shots, while Stanford's Andrew Kartunen recorded his 11th career shutout in the effort.
Davidson has a week break before returning to action in its SoCon opener at Elon Sept. 30. The Cardinal will continue their six-game homestand Friday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against College of Charleston.
College of Charleston vs. Stetson ? Cancelled
ORLANDO, Fla. - The College of Charleston men's soccer game against Stetson in the UCF Fall Classic was cancelled due to inclement weather on Sunday.
The Cougars, 6-1-0, are in action again on Friday, Sept. 28th when they play at Stanford at 7:30.
