Mountaineers Blank VMI to Remain Unbeaten

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Appalachian State women’s soccer team continued it’s road trip with a victory over VMI. The 3-0 win over the Keydets is the fourth in the series in as many attempts. With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 5-0-2 on the season, the seven match unbeaten steak ties the longest in school history giving the Mountaineers their best start in school history.

Earning the win in goal, sophomore Emma White played all 90 minutes and did not allow a goal for her third shutout of the season and fourth win in five decisions. White made one save on the day as five shots missed the target.

Freshman Rene Korman opened the scoring in the 15th minute by putting away a one-on-one opportunity against the Keydet goalkeeper. Junior Casey Cleary fed Korman in space to earn the assist. The goal is the first of Korman’s career. Cleary’s assist is her second of the season.

ASU held the lead though the intermission and widened the lead just before the hour mark as freshman Carella DiMaggio was in the right place at the right time and pushed home the second goal of the day. The unassisted goal is DiMaggio’s first of her career.

The Mountaineers put the game on ice in the 80th minute when freshman Stephanie Aaron knocked home a loose ball in the box. Senior Lindsay Moore scored the assist as she delivered the corner kick into the box to open the play.

Appalachian outshot VMI by a 26-5 margin with 13 shots on frame. ASU committed six fouls while only drawing five infractions. The Apps forced nine corner kicks while only allowing one.

The team will return to Boone for classes before heading south to Davidson to open SoCon play on Thursday, September 27 at 7:00. ASU’s next home match is on Sunday, September 30 at 1:00 with the Mountaineers hosting the College of Charleston. Admission to the ASU Soccer Stadium is free.
