Elon Places Third at Draper Intercollegiate
DRAPER, Va. ? Samantha Widmer carded a two-over-par 74 in final-round action as Elon finished in third place out of 15 teams at the Draper Intercollegiate women’s golf tournament Tuesday on the 5,910-yard Draper Valley Golf Course.
The team’s top scorer on the second day of the two-day, two-round event, Widmer (Tied-11th/76-74?150) moved up from a tie for 27th place at the conclusion of the opening round to an 11th-place finish in the 83-player field.
Danielle Mills (Tied-5th/71-75?146), Frederique Bruell (Tied-11th/75-75?150) and Kelsey Johnson (Tied-20th/74-78?152) all joined Widmer in the top-20 for the Phoenix. Ashley Barber (56th/80-83?163) also represented the team. Elon’s Taylor Johnson (Tied-11th/77-73?150) turned in the best finish of the tournament’s eight players competing as individuals.
The Phoenix (296-302?598) finished behind champion Winthrop (292-297?589) and runner-up Charleston Southern (292-303?595), missing second place by a mere three shots for the 36-hole tournament.
Belmont (304-299?603), Gardner-Webb (299-306?605), Radford (301-305?606), Kennesaw State (306-304?610), Tennessee Tech (300-313?613), Evansville (306-307?613), host Appalachian State (300-313?613), High Point (312-319?631), Presbyterian (345-344?689), The Citadel (347-344?691), South Carolina State (346-347?693) and Hollins (425-420?845) rounded out the field.
Fourteen-stroke improvement carries Terriers into third place

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- A 14-shot improvement during the second round and the tournament's second lowest score on day two lifted the Wofford women's golf team into a third-place result at the season-opening Colonial Women's Intercollegiate on the par 72, 6,279-yard Jamestown Course in Williamsburg, Va.
Freshman Meredith Few keyed the second-round surge with a 1-over par 73 to finish in a tie for 11th following a 79-73--152 (+8) outing. Her name was just one stroke ahead of teammates, junior All-SoCon player Erin Wells and sophomore Sarah Herbert, on the scoreboard. Wells fired a 74-79--153 (+9), while Herbert was the team's leader throughout the second 18 holes with a 9-over par 81-72--153.
Fellow rookie Alex Rankin completed her inaugural appearance in a Terrier uniform with a 40th-place tying result of 86-77--163 (+19). Sophomore Ellen Kvarby concluded the event with an 81-83--164 (+20) to tie for 43rd among the individuals.
Longwood captured the team title finishing 10 strokes ahead of Wofford, while the Lancers' Mary Carmody was crowned the individual medalist with a 73-72--145 (+1).
The Terriers will next compete Sept. 29-30 at the Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate at the Waynesville Country Club in Waynesville, N.C.

UNCG women’s golf finishes 17th at Cougar Classic
HANAHAN, SC ? UNC Greensboro’s women’s golf team wrapped up play at its season-opening tournament on Tuesday and finished in 17th place.
The Spartans shot a final round 316 to finish with a tournament score of 922. Sophomore Annelie Weimenhog, a sophomore from Kattarp, Sweden, was UNCG’s top finisher, placing in a tie for 54th place. She shot a final round 77, the Spartans’ lowest score on Tuesday, to finish 12-over par for the tournament. Teammate Ashley Mylton was one shot behind her in a tie for 58th place, carding a 79 on Tuesday.
Notre Dame won the team title with a score of 870, one shot better than Tennessee and five shots better than Texas and Alabama. Notre Dame’s Lisa Maunu rallied to win the individual title. The first round leader who faltered yesterday, Maunu shot a final round 70 to finish at 210, topping teammate So-Hyun Park by three shots for medalist honors. Tennessee’s Marci Turner was third at 214.
UNCG returns to action in two weeks at the Myrtle Beach Classic.

Hilea Helps Furman To 10th Place Finish At Cougar Classic
Charleston, S.C. -- Freshman Jaclyn Hilea carded a final round two-under 70, equalling the best individual round of the day, to help Furman fire a nine-over 297 and claim 10th at the Cougar Classic at Yeaman’s Hall on Tuesday.
Hilea, a native of Kaneohe, Hawai’i, notched three birdies and an eagle to record her best collegiate round and secure a share of 20th place. Junior Blair Lamb posted a 74 to place 27th while Stefanie Kenoyer slipped to 35th after a final round five-over par 77.
Furman’s final round 297 marked the fifth best team score of the day as Notre Dame (287-292-291=870) claimed the team title over Tennessee
(288-288-295=871) by one stroke. Notre Dame’s Lisa Maunu (66-74-70=210) matched Hilea with a third round two-under par 70 to edge teammate So-Hyun Park (70-69-74=213) for individual honors.
The strong 20-team field at the Cougar Classic featured no fewer than 10 of the top 45 teams in the nation. Furman, which finished last season 41st in the GolfWeek Women’s Collegiate Rankings, returns to action October 12-14 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Citadel Golf Opens 2007-2008 Season
Draper, Va. ? The Citadel golf team completed their first tournament of the 2007-08 season, finishing 13th at the 54-hole Draper Valley Intercollegiate. The tournament was played at the par-72, 5, 910-yard Draper Valley Golf Club and hosted by Appalachian State.
The Bulldogs combined to shoot a 691 as a team on the final day after firing rounds of 347 and 344 on the first two days Freshman captain Kate Hardina led the way for the Bulldogs finishing with a total score of 161 (80,81). Junior Kasey Owens put up the second-best score for the Cadets to finish with a total of 174 (86,88), while freshman Christine Clark ended with the third-best total score for the Bulldogs in the tournament with a 175 (87,88). Freshman, Sheri Rockefeller and junior Elizabeth Penn-Sanders rounded out the Bulldog players.
Winthrop won the tournament by six strokes over Charleston Southern. Olivia Higgins of Charleston Southern won the individual championship as she shot a total of 140.
The Citadel will be back on the links to play the Great Smokies Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina, September 28-30.
