ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Wofford senior Whitney Steelman netted her third goal in as many games and tacked on an assist as the Terriers tallied a 3-0 shutout victory at South Carolina State in women's soccer action Tuesday evening in Orangeburg, S.C.
Steelman, who scored the team's only goals in recent contests at Kennesaw State and in her homecoming at Western Kentucky, added another to her season total against the Lady Bulldogs. Her goal at 50:00 came off a Kara Bennewitz assist and closed the scoring for the night.
Steelman has now tied Christie Clarke (1994-97) for seventh on Wofford's all-time list for goals scored with 15, while her 13 career assists also tie for seventh among Terriers with Faith Stewart (1999-2002) and Jaime Cutts (2000-03). Steelman also moved into seventh place by herself with 42 career points, surpassing the 41 set by Amanda Leyland (1997-2000).
Fellow senior Natalie Ferrara registered the first Wofford (4-1-1) score of the night, at 4:46, on an assist via sophomore Kendra Merchant. Merchant then found the back of the net herself just before halftime, at 41:38, on Steelman's assist.
Freshman Katie McChesney earned her third shutout of the season with five saves, moving her into seventh on the Terriers' all-time lists past the two blankings Prentiss Counts had in 1997 and the 20 saves Katie Relihan notched from 2003-04.
Tandia Taylor paced South Carolina State (2-3) with three shots, while Merchant was Wofford's leader with five.
The Terriers will return home for their next contest, a 7 p.m. Friday match against Charleston Southern at Snyder Field.
