Davidson 3, Mercer 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. Freshman Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) scored her first collegiate goal in helping the Davidson Wildcats break out of an offensive slump on their way to a 3-1 home victory over the Mercer Bears on Sunday afternoon in women's soccer action. Davidson snapped its two-game losing streak to improve to 2-3-0 on the season, while the Bears saw their record drop to 2-3-1.
The Wildcats also halted a two-game scoreless streak in netting a season-high three goals. They had been held scoreless in their two previous contests against Air Force and Colorado College.
Davidson wasted no time in getting on the board first thanks to the shifty moves of sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) at the 7:53 mark. After the ball was passed around a few times near the Bears' 18-yard box, Bye-Nagel received it at the top of the box. She made a move to her right and drove pass a Mercer defender on the right side of the box, firing in a shot to the far side of the goal for her second score of the season and a 1-0 advantage for the Wildcats.
But, just six minutes later, Mercer's Catie Marshalek brought her team back to an even 1-1 tie with Davidson. Mercer's Courtney Maxey set the goal up when she drove ball along the right sideline and sent a perfect cross into Davidson's goalie box. Marshalek was right there in the center of the box to strike the ball in with a header to the left side past a diving Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) to tie things up at one-all.
From there, the score remained tied until Davidson finally broke through at the 61:27 mark in the second half. Sophomore Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), who kicked in the game-winner two weeks ago at home against High Point, gave the Wildcats the lead for good on a nice rebound shot. Senior captain Kristen Koehrn (La Mesa, Calif.) fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that hit the top of the cross bar and went straight down. The ball bounced away from the Bear keeper when Conner slipped in behind the defense to gather in the loose ball. She then chipped it in to the left side for her second goal of the season.
Until Conner scored, Davidson had just two shots through the first 60 minutes of the contest as Mercer controlled the ball most of that time, picking up nine shots in the process.
Flink gave Davidson its finally tally of the afternoon at the 70:03 mark. The freshman retrieved a loose corner kick and drove a left-footed strike on her first touch through traffic in the box for her first-career collegiate goal and a 3-1 Wildcat win.
Mercer held a slim 12-11 advantage in shots as four players picked up two shots each for the Bears.
English registered eight saves between the posts for Davidson, her fifth straight game with five or more, while Mercer's Worts came up with a single save.
The Wildcats hit the road for their only in-season tournament when they head to the College of Charleston tournament on Sept. 21 & 23. Davidson will face Vanderbilt on Friday at 5 p.m. and then take on LSU, Sunday, at 12 noon.

Appalachian State 2, Charleston Southern 1
BOONE, N.C. ? The Appalachian State women’s rallied in the second half to a 2-1 victory over Charleston Southern at the ASU Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 3-0-2, while the CSU Buccaneers fall to 2-2-0 on the season. Sunday’s win improved the program’s overall record to 99-134-20, leaving the Mountaineers one win short of the century mark in their 14th year of existence
“We played well today,” said head coach Ben Popoola. “We gave up an early goal which put us behind. We came back after halftime and dominated possession in the second half; giving ourselves plenty of chances. The real difference was that we put away our chances when we got them.”
Appalachian’s season shutout came to an end 2:58 into the match as CSU’s Alyssa Clay netted the early goal from 12 yards out. The Mountaineers went the first 402:58 without allowing a goal, one of the longest shutout steaks in the nation.
The Mountaineers struggled to piece together meaningful chances throughout the first half. Appalachian trailed 1-0 into the intermission, but found the equalizer only seven minutes after the break. Senior Jaclyn Hoffman found junior Casey Cleary on the wing at the edge of the penalty area with a cutting pass. Cleary dribbled a few yards closer and took the scoring shot from 10 yards out.
The goal is Cleary’s second of the season and 18th of her career, moving her into a tie with Allison Osborne for fourth place on the all-time scoring chart. Hoffman’s assist is her first of the season and 11th in her career. Hoffman needs only one assist to move into a tie for third place on the all-time assist chart with Jennifer Rudy.
The Apps took the lead two minutes later on the wings of a goal from sophomore Stephanie Balzano. A couple of quick passes at the top of the 18-yard box from Cleary to sophomore Caroline Lowe and then from Lowe to Balzano were employed to find open space. Balzano found the net from 22 yards to give Appalachian the lead that they would not surrender.
The goal is the second of Balzano’s season and career at Appalachian. Lowe and Cleary both earned assists, their first of the season.
Sophomore Emma White earned the win in goal to improve to 2-0-1 on the season. White stopped seven shots and allowed her first goal of the season in the match.
Appalachian will now go on the road for their next three matches with trips to Longwood on September 20 (7:00 p.m.) , VMI on Sept. 22 (1:00 p.m.) and Davidson on Sept. 27 (7:00 p.m.). The next home match is on Sept. 30 as the Mountaineers will take on College of Charleston at 1:00 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Stadium.
UNC Greensboro 1, Wake Forest 1 (2OT)
GREENSBORO, NC ? The UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team (3-2-1) tied Wake Forest (3-3-1), 1-1, Saturday in a double-overtime match at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Control of the first half belonged to Wake as the majority of the 45 minutes took place on their offensive side. The Demon Deacons took 13 shots with one hitting the mark as Jill Hutchinson landed her second goal of the season. In the 29th minute, Hutchinson headed the ball in after teammate Kaley Fountain got a foot on corner by Amanda Lebo.
The Spartans answered back in the 34th minute. Sophomore defender Lauren Lopez popped the ball just into the 18 finding sophomore forward Kelly Attayek for her first goal of the season. Attayek maneuvered past two defenders and touched the ball into the right corner just past Wake goalkeeper Amanda Barasha.
The second half was a different story as the battles were on both ends of the pitch. Both teams came out with a more physical and more aggressive style of play. Despite the shot opportunities, neither team was able to hit the game-winner.
The 1-1 tie at the end of regulation resulted in two ten-minute overtime periods. The game remained tied after the extra 20 minutes.
The Demon Deacons out-shot the Spartans, 25-8, but it was quality not quantity that kept UNCG in the game. Radwanski said that even though the shot numbers were a bit skewed, quality was certainly in the Spartan’s favor.
Radwanski and his team will take the draw and move forward with it. “We’ve got Tennessee next Friday and then we start conference play. Every game is an opportunity to make ourselves better.”
Kelley Attayek was awarded the Greg Harrison UNCG Player of the Game Award.
The Spartans will continue play on Friday, September 21 as they host No. 15 Tennessee. This will be UNCG’s final non-conference game.
