It was the Southern Conference opener for both teams. UNCG improves to 7-7, 1-0 while GSU drops to 3-10, 0-1.

Today was a tough loss, said GSU head coach Nicole McCray. We fight so hard at times then other times were ready to go to the next game. UNCG is a great team and they made the plays at the end of the game, which was the difference.

UNC Greensboro came back with four straight points to take the lead and broke a 10-10 tie with three consecutive kills. From there the match was in hand as The Citadel would go on to win the game 30-18 and the match.

“I am proud of the effort and enthusiasm our girls put into achieving this win,” said head coach Carolyn Geiger. Prior to the match, the team set goals for themselves and fulfilled each goal. Our freshmen really stepped up and played with confidence. We played well throughout the entire match. It was a great win.”

Cullowhee, N.C. ? The Citadel lost a disappointing match to UNC Wilmington 3-1 in a great team effort. Wilmington took game one 30-22, the Bulldogs won game two 30-28, the Seahawks stole game two 31-29 and finished off the match with a win in game four 30-21.

Freshmen Blaine McAllister, Tatum Jestila and Caitlin Vyborny were challenged to produce as junior Rachel Sanders only played defense after a minor injury in their win against NC A&T. The freshmen stepped up to play incredibly as McAllister led the offense and defense by recording her first double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs. Jestila and Vyborny played great as well as they recorded 10 kills each. Freshmen Middle blockers Jessica Maas and Amanda Beal also played great as they recorded 9 kills each and the team had six total blocks. Juniors Emily Hill and Ashley Winter did their part as well as Hill dished out 35 attack assists and Winter had 11 digs.

In game one Wilmington jumped out to a 6-1 lead to put the pressure on The Citadel. The Seahawks didn’t stop there as they would use a 6-0 run to increase their lead to nine making the score 13-4. The Bulldogs would continue to struggle as the Seahawks added another 6-0 run to extend their lead to 13 putting the score at 22-9. Wilmington seemed to have the game in hand as the two team exchanged points 6-4 showing the score 28-13. The Bulldogs refused to go down with out a fight as they put together a 9-0 run but it was a little too late as the Seahawks would win game 30-22.

Game two was a little different as The Citadel used the momentum from their 9-0 run in the first game to jump out to a 7-3 lead. However, Wilmington used a 7-0 run to take the lead 13-9. From there the Bulldogs would battle back to close within one point at 13-12, but the Seahawks would go on a 4-0 run of their own to extend their lead back to five at 17-12. The Dogs would not go down though as they managed a 6-1 rally to tie the game at 18. Three lead changes later the Dogs used a 3-0 run to put all the pressure on the Seahawks 28-25. The Citadel would finish Wilmington off 30-28 to tie the match at 1-1.

The third game was more of the same drama in the beginning of the match as neither team led by more than two points. It was a back and forth consisting of nine lead changes. With the score 14-13 in favor of Wilmington, the Seahawks would rally together a 6-0 run to put the pressure on the Bulldogs. The Dogs would answer back with a 8-2 run to close within one point at 22-21. The two teams were in a battle as the score was tied at 26, 27, 28 and 29. Wilmington would find a way to get the final two points to win the game 31-29.

The Citadel would find themselves behind early in the fourth game down 10-4. It would be a constant struggle as the Bulldogs fought to get back into the game. Wilmington tried to put the Bulldogs away early as they went on a 7-0 run to put the score at 20-7. Although behind, The Bulldogs would not give up as they went back and forth with Wilmington closing the gap to 10 points making the score 18-28. The Dogs couldn’t rally back from such a large deficit as the Seahawks took the game 30-21 and the match.

“We played without our experienced outside hitter in the front row and fought hard the whole match,” said head coach Carolyn Geiger. We brought in freshmen outside hitter Blaine McAllister to hit on the outside and she did an outstanding job. We could have played more error free volleyball, but I was happy with our overall performance and effort.”

The Citadel won one of four games in the Catamount Clash, and junior Rachel Sanders made the All-Tournament team.
