The CofC women’s soccer team shut out Charleston Southern, 3-0, in the 2007 Silver Cup Tues., Sept. 11, at Patriots Point Field in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
“I thought that after a tough couple losses we really needed to step up tonight at home,” said CofC head coach Kevin Dempsey. “The Silver Cup means a lot to the program, it’s been here for six years and we wanted to keep it here and the girls really played like it.
In the first 23 minutes of the game, Cougars forward, Brittany Schneider, had four breakaways only to be stopped by Buccs goalkeeper Alyssa Budros.
The Cougars’ first goal of the season came in the 19th minute when Chrissy Caruso booted a ball six yards out off a cross from Schneider. The Buccs came close to responding when a free kick sailed into the penalty box in the 23rd minute and was stopped by Cougars’ goalie Erin Smith.
CofC added its second goal when freshman forward, Kerry Broderick, took a pass from Katie Browne and found the net from seven yards out (21:59).
Cougar midfielder Megan Manthey continued the attack late in the first half with a shot from 20 yards out that bounced off the cross bar.
The Buccs threatened to score when Alyssa Clay battled deep in Cougar territory in the 70th minute. CofC defender Alanna Jordan cleared the ball to stop her drive.
In the 76th minute Morgan Benz served up an assist as Browne sealed the Cougars’ shutout with the third and final goal of the game.
The Silver Cup has been an annual tradition between CofC and Charleston Southern, with the Cougars leading the series 6-0-1. The Cougars are back in action Fri., Oct. 14, when they host the College of Charleston Cougar Classic. CofC will face Jacksonville at 7:30 and Francis Marion Sun., Sept. 16, at 2:30.
Appalachian State 2, UNC Asheville 0
BOONE, NC - The Appalachian State women’s soccer team improved to 2-0-2 with a 2-0 victory over UNC Asheville. In the win, the Mountaineers extend their shutout streak to 410 minutes. Appalachian is one of eight teams in the nation to have not allowed a goal this year.
Appalachian opened the scoring with a 14th minute goal off the head of sophomore Paige Morrow. Twin sister Leigh Morrow assisted on the scoring play by delivering a corner kick to the near post and awaiting head of Paige who put the ball in the net. The goal is the Paige’s first of the season, sixth of her career and also the first time at ASU that the sisters have assisted each other.
Appalachian held the 1-0 lead until just before the hour mark when sophomore Caroline Lowe extended the lead. Lowe made a long run along the far side of the 18-yard box to the goal-line. In a move that seemed to defy the laws of physics, struck the ball left footed high across the face of goal. The ball sailed over the keeper, took one bounce and ricocheted off the post into the net, surprising many. The unassisted goal is Lowe’s fifth career and first of the 2007 season.
Earning her second start in goal was freshman Caroline Clarke who earned her second win and second shutout of the young season. Clarke stopped five shots including four in the final 45 minutes.
Appalachian led the shot total with 14 to UNC Asheville’s 12 attempts. The Mountaineers committed 11 fouls while drawing only six.
The next action for Appalachian will be on Sunday, September 16 as the Mountaineers will take on Charleston Southern in the final game of the Appalachian Classic. The match kicks off at 2:00 at the ASU Soccer Stadium.
Chattanooga 0, Eastern Kentucky 0 (2OT)
RICHMOND, Ky. ? Freshman keeper Milla Junni tallied 13 saves in Chattanooga’s double overtime tie with Eastern Kentucky Tuesday afternoon at the EKU Soccer Field in Richmond, Ky.
Junni posted five saves in each period of regulation and three more in the second overtime for her first collegiate shutout. The Lady Mocs (0-2-1) got off five shots in the game led by freshman Sara Francescon’s two shots with one on goal.
Eastern Kentucky (1-2-2) outshot Chattanooga 30-5 and had 13 shots on goal to UTC’s five. EKU keeper Stephanie Lynch posted three saves playing the whole game in goal. The Colonels had four corner kicks to none for the Lady Mocs.
The Lady Mocs will open the home portion of their schedule this Friday at 7:00 p.m at the North River Soccer Complex. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for 18 and under. UTC students get in free to all events with a valid UTC MOCS card.
