South Carolina 2, Wofford 1 (OT)

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Wofford men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1 in overtime, at South Carolina Tuesday night in non-conference action at Stone Stadium. The Terriers had opened the season with three-straight shutouts for the first time in school history.

Freshman Kentrel Owens netted his first career goal to give Wofford an early 1-0 edge at 73:44 underneath a diving attempt by USC keeper Jimmy Maurer.

South Carolina would equalize the scoring when Sam Arthur headed in a deflection off the crossbar with just under five minutes remaining in regulation to knot the game at 1-1 at 85:45.

Kevan Hawkins scored the game winner at 91:23 past Wofford (2-1-1) goalkeeper Joey Taylor. The Gamecocks' winning tally came off a pass from Schuyler Reardon.

The opening 45 minutes was a defensive battle with just three total shots and host South Carolina (3-2) holding a one-shot advantage. In the second half, USC held a 9-5 advantage on attempts but the Terriers continued to hold the edge on corner kicks.

The match between Wofford and the Gamecocks marked the second-straight season the two schools have met. Phil Beene, a former USC player now suiting up for the second year with the Terriers, led Wofford with two shots.

The Terriers will return to action this weekend when they host the Wofford/adidas Invitational at Snyder Field. Wofford will welcome Furman, UNC Asheville and Robert Morris to Spartanburg for the two-day tournament beginning with a 3:30 p.m. start Friday.
