Offensive Player of the Week
Georgia Southern quarterback Jayson Foster (Canton, Ga.) and Appalachian State quarterback Trey Elder (Duncan, S.C.) were named SoCon Offensive Players of the Week. Foster rushed for 231 yards and three touchdowns in Georgia Southern’s 45-21 season-opening win over West Georgia. He completed 6-of-9 passes for 124 yards. Elder, playing in place of injured Armanti Edwards, completed 9-of-13 passes for 210 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown in Appalachian State’s 48-7 win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
Defensive Player of the Week
Wofford linebacker Gary Blount (St. Mary’s, Ga.) was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week. A sophomore, Blount intercepted two passes and recorded a game-high six tackles for the Terriers. Wofford posted a 52-24 victory over Charleston Southern at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Special Teams Player of the Week
The Citadel’s Johnathan Synovec (Columbia, S.C.) was named Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The freshman recorded two blocked punts as a member of the Bulldog’s special team. The Bulldogs turned one of the blocks into a field goal. The Citadel posted a 76-0 victory over Webber International recording the most points in nearly a century.
Freshman of the Week
Elon quarterback Scott Riddle (Ramseur, N.C.) was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. The freshman completed 23-of-34 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns in Elon’s 59-16 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan.
