Men's Soccer Teams Notch Four Wins, Three Ties Sunday

Davidson 2, Dayton 1 (OT)

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After Dayton rallied to tie the score with 46 seconds remaining in regulation, Davidson's Machel Turner responded with a golden goal in the 93rd minute to give the Wildcats a 2-1 victory on the final day of the UNC Greensboro adidas Classic Sunday afternoon. The win was the first of the campaign for Davidson as it improves to 1-3-0 overall, while the Flyers’ seven game unbeaten streak comes to an end, dropping them to 2-1-1.

“We’ve played some good soccer and it’s nice to get a win,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Our guys showed a lot of heart to stay with the game, and as a result we beat a very good Dayton team.”

Turner’s (Kingston, Jamaica) fourth career strike came when he received a pass from fellow forward Tom Lavan (Omaha, Neb.), beat his defender one-on-one, and blasted a right-footed shot from 15 yards out into the back of the net. The assist was the third of the young slate for Lavan.

“It went from the worst feeling in the world, to the best feeling in the world,” commented senior co-captain Robby Hoak (Raleigh, N.C.).

Davidson grabbed an early 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute on Aaron West’s (Chapel Hill, N.C.) header following a Whitey Bolan (Wilmington, N.C.) shot that caromed off the cross bar.

Just minutes after Dayton’s Isaac Kissi picked up his second yellow card forcing the Flyers to play a man down; West was issued a red card as a result of a bicycle kick that unintentionally struck a defender in the face.

Trailing almost the entire contest, Dayton provided an equalizer at the 89:14 mark to send the game into overtime. Alex Torda evened the match with a rip from 15 yards out that found the lower left corner of the goal.

Dayton held a slim 12-11 edge in shots.

Robby Goldsberry (Tampa, Fla.) finished with a game-high six saves for the Wildcats, while Dayton’s Zac Gibbens stop a pair of attempts on frame.

“I want to applaud Robby Goldsberry for the way he played this afternoon,” said Spear. “He made some very critical saves in net for us.”

Davidson will enjoy a five-day break before traveling to Charlotte for a 7 p.m. match with the 49ers Saturday, Sept. 15. Dayton returns home for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Eastern Illinois Friday.

“We are a very tired team following a pair of weekend tournaments,” remarked Matt Spear. “We need to rest and recover quickly to get ready for a big game next weekend against our cross-county rival.”

Furman 4, Jacksonville 1

Greenville, S.C. -- Brooks Duff and Shea Salinas each tallied a goal and added an assist as Furman topped Jacksonville 4-1 to claim the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational title Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium.

Furman (4-0-0) wasted little time taking control of the match as Salinas tallied his first goal of the season in the seventh minute. Duff, the tournament’s offensive MVP, crossed the ball into the box from the right and Eliot Paschalis centered to Salinas who beat keeper Matt Gilman to give Furman the 1-0 lead.

Jacksonville’s Anton Axelsson found room in the box and beat Furman keeper Bryan Amos with a low shot to the right side in the 61st minute to avoid the shutout for the Dolphins (1-2-1).

"I’m proud of the guys," said head coach Doug Allison. "We’re off to a good start and we had a good weekend. I’m happy for Brooks and Michael for winning the awards. They were well deserved and it was definitely a team effort."

Amos notched three saves in recording the win in goal for Furman while Gilman stopped four shots in defeat. Furman held a 17-8 edge in shot attempts and the Paladins took five corners to just one by the Dolphins.

Wofford 1, High Point 0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford duo of junior goalkeeper Joey Taylor and sophomore forward Yakov Rubinchik were the deciding factors Sunday evening as they helped lead the Terriers to a 1-0 triumph over High Point in non-conference men's soccer action at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

Taylor, who missed much of last season due to an arm injury, remained unscored upon in 2007 by pitching his third-straight shutout to start the season. He collected three saves against the Panthers to set a school single-season Division I era (1995-present) record for shutouts. His three blankings on the campaign are the most by a Wofford (2-0-1) goalie since Will King also had three during the 1993 season.

Rubinchik scored the game's only goal at 52:24. Following a free kick by teammate Armin Kinigadner, which found the head of a streaking Nick Schuermann only to hit the back post, High Point (0-3-1) attempted to clear the ball out of its own penalty box. The clear, however, was intercepted by Rubinchik, who then proceeded to fire it back into the left side of the net.

The Terriers had numerous other chances to put more points on the board in what resulted in a 14-8 shot advantage. Kinigadner had the game's first chance when he sent a shot just wide six minutes in, while senior Kyle Walker sailed an attempt just high over the left corner with 2:10 remaining before halftime.

In the second half, junior Phil Beene also sent a shot wide at 41:30, while freshman Kentrel Owens was stopped point-blank by Panther goalkeeper Adam Ross seven-and-a-half minutes into the second period.

High Point, however, had a few chances itself, including a Josh Windley shot off the crossbar after he eluded the Wofford defense with just over 20 minutes to play in the opening stanza. He also sent a header high with 11:30 passed in the second half before Matt Tuttle placed a free kick just high from 25 yards out later in the session.

The Panthers continued their offensive attack and pushed for another opportunity to score late, but the Terrier defense stood firm and preserved the shutout.

Wofford was led by two shots each from Schuermann, Beene, Kinigadner, Owens and sophomore Moe Kelli. Tuttle paced High Point with three shots off the bench.

The Terriers will next travel to Columbia, S.C., for a 7 p.m. Tuesday meeting with South Carolina before returning home this weekend to host the Wofford/adidas Invitational and welcoming Furman, UNC Asheville and Robert Morris to Snyder Field.

As the final minute began, Appalachian was able to draw even 3-3. Senior Sean Sassano delivered a cross into the box to the awaiting foot of Junior J.T. LaBruyere. LaBruyere unleashed a shot which was partially saved. Senior Tim Bender pushed the rebound across the line for the goal.. The goal is Bender’s first of the season and fourth in his career.

Senior Greg Walters replaced Smith and played the remaining 88 minutes. Walters made two saves and allowed goals in the 36th minute and 52nd minute.

Mercer 1, Georgia Southern 0 (OT)

MACON, Ga. ? Georgia Southern men’s soccer fell, Sunday evening, to Mercer in a 1-0, overtime clash after the Bears’ Daniel Concepcion scored off a corner kick in the 94th minute.

The Eagles drop to 1-3 overall, extending the skid to three games.  Mercer improves to 3-1 winning its third straight.

Both teams registered only one shot in the first stanza, while Georgia Southern held a 3-2 advantage in first-half corner kicks.

Georgia Southern’s lone shot in the first half came off the foot of junior midfielder Scott DeVault (Woodstock, Ga.) in the 22nd minute, but was stopped by Mercer’s David Bird.

In the second half, both teams struggled to find the back of the net.  Mercer added five more shots to their tally, but sophomore keeper Joey Ralph (Martinez, Ga.) stopped all three of the Bears’ shots on goal.

The Eagles’ best chances came in the last ten minutes of regulation.  Sophomore forward Jon-Pierre Anthony (Birmingham, Ala.) tallied a pair of shots in the 82nd and 88th minutes, while junior defender Jon Kinsler (Ormond Beach, Fla.) fired a shot in the 87th minute, but each of them were stopped by Mercer’s goalkeeper.

“Overall the effort was great today,” said second-year head coach Kevin Kennedy.  “I was pleased with the way we played.  We should’ve had a couple opportunities that we should have put away.  We had good looks today, but we just did not finish with the chances we got.  We take some confidence in that we created some good opportunities.”

Ralph had a strong performance in the cage, making four total saves in 93:30 minutes of action.  Mercer’s David Bird garnered the shutout victory, also making four saves on the day.

“This was a game that Joey (Ralph) will get better from,” said Kennedy.  “His communication was better, and his distribution was good today.”

Overall, the Bears led in the shots category by a 7-4 margin.  The Eagles held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bears played one man down after Richard Perdomo received his second yellow card of the match in the 68th minute.

The Eagles will have Monday and Tuesday to regroup before they continue their seven-game road trip and clash with North Carolina State.  The Wednesday (Sep. 12) game is slated for 4 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C. at Derr Stadium.
