Christy Barrow scored two goals and added two assists as the College of Charleston downed Winthrop, 4-0, in a women's college soccer scrimmage Saturday at Patriots Point Field.
Barrow's first goal gave the Cougars a 1-0 first half advantage. Brittany Schneider's goal stretched Charleston's lead to 2-0 at intermission.
Barrow's second score extended Charleston's margin to 3-0. Christian Patton, a sophomore from Columbia, S.C., closed the scoring with the first goal of her career.
The Cougars play at Charlotte in a scrimmage at 5:00 on Saturday.
The Citadel Ties Campbell, 1-1, in Preseason Exhibition
Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel opened the 2007 season at W.L.I Field Monday evening, playing to a draw against Campbell, 1-1. The two teams played three, 30-minute periods in the preseason contest.
The Bulldogs lone goal came from the foot of Kristine Devine as she scored in the 18th minute off a penalty kick. Devine, a sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga. scored her first goal in a Bulldog uniform.
Campbell tied the match in the 47th minute as Ashley McMenamy shot the ball into the top left corner, just past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Emily Green. McMenamy was fed the ball from the right side of the field by teammate Danielle Mandela.
“I am pleased with our performance tonight as everyone was able to contribute,” said head coach Bob Winch. “We had some really gutty performances by some of our freshman tonight. I am looking forward to a lot of hard work by our team over the next 10 days in preparation for our season opener against Charlotte.”
Green gave up the single Camel goal of the match as all three Bulldog goalkeepers split an equal amount of playing time. Campbell outshot The Citadel, 11-6, while The Citadel recorded five saves to Campbell’s two. The Camels recorded six corner kicks in the contest to the Bulldogs’ two while The Citadel had 10 fouls to Campbell’s nine. Campbell was whistled offside three times in the match while the Bulldogs did not receive an offside whistle.
The Citadel opens the 2007 regular season on Aug. 31 at Charlotte at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs do not return home until Sept. 14 when the Cadets host Presbyterian at 4 p.m.
Davidson and Nationally Ranked Clemson Battle to the End in Women's Soccer Exhibition

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson women's soccer team take what they have been practicing on the past few days in preseason to good use when the Wildcats challenged nationally ranked Clemson to the very end Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats and Tigers battled each other till the 88th minute when Clemson toed in a rebound off the hands of senior goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) for the lone goal and a 1-0 victory in both teams first exhibition games of the season. Clemson came into the match with a preseason ranking of 19th according to soccerbuzz.com after finishing last season ranked 15th in the final soccerbuzz.com poll.
Despite being outshot, 18-4, Davidson played very well and head coach Greg Ashton was please with his team's efforts.
"It was great to get a game against a quality team," said Ashton, who is entering his fourth year at the helm of the women's soccer program. "We showed great discipline and were extremely unfortunate to give up a goal in the last couple of minutes. I felt we deserved more from the way we competed, so I'm very happy with the team's effort so far. We now look forward to continuing our team-development with the game on Saturday eveing against UNC Wilmington."
Davidson's best opportunity came in the 54th minute when sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) broke through the defense and had a direct shot on goal, only to have it stopped by the Clemson goalkeeper. Bye-Nagel had three of the Wildcats' four shots on the evening.
The Wildcats will finish up their preseason with a home contest against UNC Wilmington on Saturday at 7 p.m. on the field of Alumni Stadium. The two teams faced each other last season in the regular season, with the Seahawks taking a 2-0 decision on their home field.
Spartans fall 2-0 in women’s soccer exhibition

GREENSBORO, NC ? In an exhibition match Tuesday against East Carolina, the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team fell to the Pirates, 2-0.
After an hour delay due to inclement weather, both teams set foot on the field to start the 2007-08 women’s soccer season.
ECU’s Caylin Sandke scored the first goal of the game firing in an unassisted shot from the top of the box at the 43:30 mark of the first half. In the second half, an assist from ECU’s Madison Keller set up a right wing shot for Amy Szilard at 66:05.
Both teams took full advantage of substitutions working to find the right on-field combinations. In the 90 minutes of play, 20 members of the UNCG women’s soccer squad saw time and 21 for the Pirates. Coming off an NCAA tournament appearance and a Southern Conference Championship last season, the Spartans started three freshmen in Tuesday’s game.
UNCG led in both shots with eight and corner kicks tallying nine. Starting goalkeeper Katherine Ryan had three saves on the night.
The Spartans resume play this weekend in a second exhibition match against Duke in Durham. The match is set to begin at 7:00pm.

Western Carolina Women's Soccer Downs Alumni, 5-2, in Saturday Scrimmage
Cullowhee, N.C. - Senior Heather Dittmer scored twice and sophomore Katie Kole dished out a pair of assists as the 2007 Catamounts downed the program alumni, 5-2, in annual scrimmage at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
"The number of women's soccer alumni who return each year shows not only the type of student-athletes Western has produced over the years, but also the tremendous amount of support that we have," said head coach Tammy DeCesare. "Our alum are always fun to watch. They bring a wealth of experience that pushes our current players."
As for her current squad of Catamounts, which open the regular season in two weeks, DeCesare felt her team was further along this season than a year ago.
"Our returning class of players are helping make us better as a squad. They are doing the little things; paying the price individually and are determined to make the team better," added DeCesare. "Our senior leadership has been tremendous both on and off the field."
Dittmer opened the scoring, tallying the first goal of the match by redirecting a rebound inside the box through a crowd in front of the cage to give Western the early advantage. The current Catamounts surged ahead for a two-goal advantage moments later as sophomore Nikki Collins played a long ball ahead where red-shirt sophomore Rachael Shomper ran it down passed the defense, beating goalkeeper Caitlin Gill who came off the back line to challenge one-on-one before dribbling it into the box for the empty net score.
Kole tallied consecutive assists as the Catamounts stretched their lead to four midway through the first half. On the first occasion, Kole played give-and-go with freshman Kellie Oberholtzer who settled the ball before playing it ahead to sophomore Shannon Fowkes going to the right side.
The second-year forward crossed her shot over, firing it into the left corner of the net to cross up both the defense and goalkeeper. Kole's second assist came as she played a through ball to sophomore Nikki Lombardo who shot from five yards outside the box. Gill deflected the hard shot, but the ball trickled off her fingertips and across the goal line for the 4-0 lead.
The alumni got on the board in the later stages of the first half as Natalie Turgeon received a pass from former teammate Casey Davis, who worked one-on-one before passing the ball wide left to Meghan Reilly. The Lubbock, Tex., native dribbled three times before firing on net, scoring in the lower left to cut the lead to three, 4-1, at the half.
WCU regained its four-point edge in the opening stages of the second half as senior Lauren Atkinson played the ball ahead to Dittmer who worked against and through the alumni defense. She uncorked a shot from just inside the outer box which bounced off the bottom of the cross bar and spun into the net for the 5-1 advantage.
Not quitting despite only having four substitutions on the warm afternoon, Western's alumni netted its final goal off a corner kick opportunity. Sophia, N.C., native and 2006 graduate Keevy Harris played a corner kick into the box where '05 alum, Natalie Turgeon, won a header, beating the keeper through a crowd for the goal in the far right hand corner of the cage.
The Catamounts out shot the alumni, 29-to-7 - including a 16-to-4 edge in the second half - and had six corner kick opportunities to a pair for the alum.
