Appalachian Falls to Campbell, 3-2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. ? The Appalachian State men’s soccer team fell in their first exhibition match of the 2007 campaign to Campbell, 3-2.
“We came out strong tonight,” said head coach Paul Stahlschmidt. “Last year, we had problems doing that, but in the end, it was an exhibition match, so we are still 0-0 on the season.”
The game was played on both sides of the pitch with both teams making extended attacks. Heat was a factor for both teams with a game-time temperature of 104 degrees.
Senior McCoy Livingston opened the scoring as he headed home a corner kick from senior Corey Lugger from the far side of the six yard box. The goal came in the 10th minute at the end of Appalachian’s first prolonged attack.
Junior Sean Sassano extended the lead five minutes later with a shot from the top of the box. Junior Juan Obregon and senior Michael Walters earned assists on the goal in the 15th minute.
The Mountaineers controlled the remainder of the first half and the opening portion of the second period until Richard Jatta placed home a Vince Petrasso low cross at the edge of the six-yard box in the 59th minute. Jatta doubled his scoreline in the 66th minute as he knocked home the equalizer from the penalty spot.
The Camels took the lead 40 seconds later when Patrasso found space inside the penalty area and cracked a shot off the right post that found the net.
Appalachian played the final 22 minutes a man down, searching for the equalizer after a player was shown the red card. The final major offensive for the Mountaineers came with only six minutes remaining in the game as Appalachian won a free kick from 28 yards out. Livingston found the delivery inside the six-yard box, but pushed the header wide.
“We did some things well, but we still have some things to work on,” added Stahlschmidt. “We played well for large portions of the match, but it was the other times that decided the match.”
The Mountaineers will continue the preseason campaign on Saturday afternoon against Gardner-Webb. The match starts at 2:00 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Stadium.
Cougars, Georgia State Play to 1-1 Draw
The College of Charleston men's soccer team tied Georgia State, 1-1, in a scrimmage held Saturday, Aug. 18th, at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Cougars struck first with a first-half goal by senior mid-fielder Sean Hinkle, assisted by junior forward David Levine. The Panthers responded with a goal of their own to even the score. C of C out shot GSU 12-4 in the final pre-season competition.
The men’s soccer team will host the Saturn of Charleston Soccer Classic at Patriot’s Point Field Aug. 31st - Sept. 2. During the weekend tournament, the Cougars will face Mercer University in their home and season opener Friday, Aug. 31, at 7:30 p.m. and Birmingham Southern on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 3:30.

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After a few days of training, the Davidson Wildcats finally squared off against someone other than themselves as they defeated in-state foe UNC Asheville 1-0 on freshman Mauricio Simms first-half strike in Sunday's men's soccer exhibition at Alumni Stadium.
Simms, a forward from Bowie, Md., scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute off a long goal kick that was flicked on by Wildcat Whitey Bolan to Simms, who then chipped the ball over the on-rushing UNCA keeper.
"Winning the match is a boost for the team's confidence, and especially for Mauricio to get the game-winner," commented Davidson head coach Matt Spear, who is beginning his seventh season at the helm of his alma mater. "For our defenders and goalkeepers, a shutout is always a crucial accomplishment. Equally significant is that all 21 healthy players got an important opportunity for match experience."
After a two-day break, Davidson returns to action in a 7:30 p.m. match at nationally-ranked North Carolina Tuesday, August 21. A year ago in preseason play, the Wildcats played the Tar Heels, who entered No. 3 in the College Soccer News Preseason Top 30 Poll, to a 1-1 draw at 1992 Team Field.
The last time these clubs met in Chapel Hill, Davidson knocked off UNC 1-0 in 2002.
"Clearly our team is tremendously excited to play North Carolina. They are a proven program at the ACC and national level, including a 2001 National Championship. It will be important to see how our players recover quickly from their fatigue and preseason level of conditioning. We will definitely give plenty of players a chance because confidence and on-field experience is valuable. If we win, awesome -- but regardless this experience will be a measuring stick of what we need to work on as a team and as individuals."
Third-Ranked Wake Forest Tops Furman In Exhibition Action, 2-0

Greenville, S.C. - Marcus Tracy and Corben Bone combined on two second half goals to lead third-ranked Wake Forest past Furman 2-0 in exhibition men's soccer action Monday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
After a scoreless first half in which Furman created several scoring chances, the Demon Deacons got on the board first in the 48th minute. Bone, a freshman, cross a free kick into the middle off the box and the charging Tracy buried a header past Furman goalkeeper Bryan Amos.
With just nine minutes remaining in regulation, it was Tracy's turn to set up Bone. The junior served a long ball and Bone got behind the Paladin defensive and slotted a shot past Amos to make it 2-0.
"Wake Forest is a great team and we have been in training for just four days," said Paladin coach Doug Allison. "We were able to take in to them in the first half, but the took it to us in the second half. It was a good chance to get experience for our 10 freshmen."
Furman notched a 4-3 edge on shots in the first half and had several opportunities to score. Just five minutes into the match, Chris Davis ran on to a through ball, but Brian Edwards saved his shot from 15 yards. Amos kept the Demon Deacons at bat in the first 45 cutting out several through balls and deflecting a one versus one shot by Michael Lahoud.
Wake Forest finished with a 13-5 edge in shots while Furman held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Amos notched three saves in the loss for Furman. Akira Fitzgerald came on in the second half to earn the win for Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons continue their preseason preparations hosting Cincinnati on Saturday at 7 p.m. Furman will travel to Columbia, S.C., to battle South Carolina in its final preseason exhibition on Friday at 7 p.m.
Spartans, Tigers play to 2-2 tie in pre-season Top 25 match-up

CLEMSON, SC ? In a battle of pre-season Top 25 ranked teams, Clemson and UNC Greensboro played to a 2-2 tie in a men’s soccer exhibition match Saturday night.
The 12th-ranked Tigers received a goal and an assist from Eric Cava in the first half to jump out to a two-goal lead. Cava scored unassisted to give Clemson a 1-0 at 37:23. He then added a helper on Tate Parrish’s goal that gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage at 39:29.
The Spartans, ranked No. 23 in the NSCAA pre-season poll, got on the board just before half when Tebatso Manyama, a transfer from Auburn-Montgomery, scored off a feed from newcomer Tim Masters at 41:20.
Junior forward Thomas Campbell knotted the score at 58:31 off a feed from Michael Bonilla to tie the game 2-2. The score remained that way through the end of regulation. The teams did not play overtime because it was exhibition play.
Shots were even at 12-12, while UNCG held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Chad Janda and Chad Dickerson split time in goal for the Spartans. Janda played the first half, recording one save. Dickerson also recorded one save, playing the second half.
UNCG returns to action on August 26 when it hosts Winthrop in an exhibition match at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore forward Bill Dworsky scored a pair of second half goals, and sophomore forward Ryan Johnson and junior midfielder Garry Lewis also found the back of the net Tuesday to lead No. 16 North Carolina past Davidson, 4-1, in an exhibition match at Fetzer Field.
With the Tar Heels holding a 2-0 lead, Dworsky scored twice in a six-minute span to put the game away for UNC. The Huntsville, Ala., tapped in a rebound of a Brian Shriver shot for his first goal at 62:37 and followed with a 25-yard unassisted strike at 68:08 for the Tar Heels' fourth and final score of the night.
After a trio of near misses by the Tar Heels early in the first half, Johnson put UNC on the board in the 33rd minute. The redshirt sophomore out of Charlotte took a through ball from midfielder Scott Campbell and chipped it over Davidson keeper Ben Ashton from 12 yards out for a 1-0 UNC lead.
After carrying the 1-0 advantage into intermission, Carolina added to its lead courtesy of Lewis' header in the 52nd minute. Junior midfielder Michael Callahan took a free kick from 30 yards out that Lewis was able to head past Davidson reserve goalkeeper Robby Goldsberry at the 51:53 mark for a 2-0 advantage.
Dworsky took over from there for the Tar Heels and capped the scoring with his low, lining 25-yard goal from the right flank into the lower, left-hand corner of the net. Carolina finished with a 12-6 edge in shots.
Down by a 4-0 margin, the Wildcats got on the board in the 74th minute on an Alex Caskey score off an assist by Peter Shelton. Caskey guided a deflected shot by Shelton into the net for Davidson's lone goal of the contest.
Freshman Tyler Deric went the distance in goal for the Tar Heels and made a pair of first-half saves. Davidson played three keepers, who combined for two saves and the four goals allowed.
The Tar Heels play their second and final exhibition match Saturday against UNC Asheville in Morganton, N.C., at 7:30 p.m. They open the regular season Friday, Aug. 31 against Monmouth in the annual Carolina Nike Classic.
