Wofford third baseman Brandon Waring on Friday was named to the Baseball America All-America team. Waring was named as the third baseman on the second team.
Vanderbilt’s Pedro Alvarez was the first team third baseman. Baseball America named Vanderbilt pitcher David Price as its Player of the Year. Waring was the only Southern Conference player named to any of the three All-America squads chosen by Baseball America.
Waring, a 6-4, 195-pound junior from West Columbia, SC (Airport HS) claimed two-thirds of the SoCon triple crown, leading the conference in batting average (.401) and home runs (27) while setting school and conference records for home runs in a season. Waring was third in the SoCon with 74 RBIs. He was a first team All-Southern Conference selection, a first team Louisville Slugger All-American, and was a unanimous choice for Most Outstanding Player in the Southern Conference Tournament.
Waring is also among the final 10 players under consideration for the Brooks Wallace Award given annually to the nation’s top college baseball player by the College Baseball Foundation.
Earlier this week, Waring signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds after being taken in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He will begin play for the Billings, Montana Mustangs of the Pioneer League on June 19.
