SoCon Softball Championship Set to Begin Tomorrow in Greensboro, N.C.

SPARTANBURG, SC ? The Southern Conference Softball Tournament kicks off Wednesday, May 9 at the UNCG Softball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

 

Chattanooga earned the No. 1 seed after recording a 16-5 mark in league play and notching its ninth regular season championship.  The College of Charleston falls in the two spot with a 14-7 record, Appalachian State rounds out the top three with an 11-10 conference record.

 

Defending tournament champion, Georgia Southern earned the No. 4 seed after a three-way tie with Western Carolina and Elon.  All three schools posted 9-11 league records and Georgia Southern had the best record head-to-head.  Last year’s regular season champions, Western Carolina landed in the fifth spot with Elon grabbing the sixth seed.  Furman just edged UNC Greensboro for the seventh seed with a 7-13 record while the tournament host Spartans landed in the eighth spot with a 7-14 mark in league play.

 

The first session of competition on May 9 pits the Cougars and the Lady Paladins squaring off in the first game of the tournament at 10:00 a.m. During the season, Charleston swept all three games with Furman. In the second game of the day, the Mountaineers will face the Phoenix at 12:00 p.m.. Appalachian State took the series 3-0 over Elon during the regular season.

 

In the second session of the day, the Eagles will battle with the Catamounts at 3:00 p.m. The two teams met back on April 28 and 29 with Western Carolina coming away with the 2-1 series win.  Finishing out the day will be Chattanooga taking on UNC Greensboro at 5:00 p.m. The Lady Mocs owned the last series between the two schools, posting a 3-0 sweep of the Spartans during the regular season.

 

The eight-team tournament is a double-elimination format with each team playing a minimum of two games. Competition begins Wednesday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. and concludes with the championship on Saturday, May 12 beginning at 1:30 p.m. with the "if necessary" game at 4:00 p.m.
