SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced today that the College of Charleston’s Jennifer Golden has been named the SoCon Player of the Week and teammate Terri Mesko has earned Pitcher of the Week honors for April 9.
Golden, a senior from Conyers, Ga., led the Cougars to a 5-0 week, including a series sweep over Georgia Southern. The first baseman was 12-of-17 from the plate for a .706 batting average with two doubles, five RBI and an .824 slugging percentage. She hit safely in all five games, including a perfect 3-for-3 in the first win over South Carolina State on April 4. Golden added an RBI in four of the five wins and was perfect from the field. She leads the league with a .411 batting average, 40 RBI and nine home runs.
Other top performers include Chattanooga’s Alyssa Edwards, Furman’s Stephanie Cushing, UNC Greensboro’s Kara Clouser and Western Carolina’s Nikki Bost.
A freshman from McDonough, Ga., Mesko tallied a 2-0 record over the weekend, both in conference action. She started the weekend with a 3-2 complete-game win over Georgia Southern on Friday, tossing eight strikeouts and allowing no earned runs. She then clinched the sweep for the Cougars with a 3-2 win on Sunday. Mesko gave up only three hits and struck out seven in the victory. On the week, she tallied a 1.00 earned run average, striking out 15 and giving up only eight hits. She leads the league with a 1.81 earned run average and has 124 strikouts, second in the conference rankings.
Other top performers include Appalachian State’s Yancey Moose, Chattanooga’s Brooke Loudermilk and Western Carolina’s Savannah Filley.
