Furman, Wofford Grab Men's Tennis Wins

Furman 6, Appalachian State 1

April 5, 2007 - BOONE--In a matchup of two teams vying for the possibility of a second-place SoCon finish, Furman defeated Appalachian State 6-1 in a conference match Thursday afternoon in Boone.

ASU and Furman entered the day tied for third place in the league at 4-2. However, by the end of the cold, windy afternoon in the High Country, Appalachian was knocked into a three-way tie for fourth (with Chattanooga and Wofford).

The day was not without positives for the Mountaineers (12-7, 4-3). Senior Dimitar Dimitrov (Sofia, Bulgaria) continued his dominance in the conference, defeating Andy Sobczyk 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 6-1 in league play. Dimitrov is now riding a ten-match singles winning streak stretching back to March 16. The senior is 15-3 overall in singles play.

Dimitrov's victory at No. 3 was one of the first to finish among six straight-set singles matches. Furman clinched the win with Michal Kociecki's 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 over David Doverspike.

Appalachian will now look to separate itself from the middle of the pack in the SoCon when it faces Georgia Southern this Saturday in Boone. ASU and GSU will face off at 11 a.m. at either the ASU Tennis Courts or the Yonahlossee Tennis Club depending on the weather.
