SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference named Chattanooga’s Alyssa Edwards as the Player of the Week with Western Carolina’s Lauren Ross being named Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 30.
Edwards, a senior from Geneva, N.Y., hit .667 for the week with one home run and a double. Her lone homer was a walk-off two-run shot to clinch the 5-3 victory over Furman in the 11th inning on Saturday. Edwards added three RBI and scored two runs for the Mocs last week. She also had 24 putouts with no errors at first base.
Edwards is among the league’s leaders in batting average (.344) and slugging percentage (.536).
Other top performers for Player of the Week include College of Charleston’s Katie Pesature, UNCG’s Mary Greenway and Western Carolina’s Mollie Fowler.
A sophomore from Hope Mills, N.C., Ross recorded her first career no-hitter, and the first this season for the Catamounts, against Georgia Southern on Saturday. She gave up two walks and struck out four in the contest. Ross went 2-0 and posted a 1.00 ERA for the week. In 14 innings pitched she allowed just seven hits, two runs and struck out eight.
Other top performers for Pitcher of the Week include Chattanooga’s Brooke Loudermilk.
