Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel dropped a 6-1 decision Tuesday afternoon in Southern Conference tennis action at the Earle Tennis Center on The Citadel campus. With the win, Wofford ended a six-match losing streak to the Bulldogs.
Wofford (10-5, 4-2 Southern) secured their first win over The Citadel since 2001 when the Terriers recorded a 5-2 victory in Spartanburg. The Citadel (2-16, 0-5 SoCon) has now lost 13 consecutive matches.
Wofford took the early lead in the match after a pair of 8-2 victories captured the doubles point. Jeff Muthig and Scott Collins won at No. 3 doubles over The Citadel’s Jerry Graham and Frederic Petrilli while the Bulldogs No. 2 doubles team of Alberto Diaz and Derek Jose fell to Wofford’s George Kernodle and Richard Cahi.
52nd-ranked Daniel Dossetor and James Eason extended their winning streak to four matches as they took the 8-5 win over Andrew Stubbs and Alex Fridzon. Dossetor and Eason are now 22-8 on the year and hold a 4-1 SoCon doubles record.
Wofford took the 2-0 lead as singles play started when Christopher Williams swept by Graham at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Derek Jose dropped the first set to Fridzon, 6-3, but held a 5-1 lead in the second set before Fridzon mounted a comeback to win, 7-5, and giving the Terriers the 3-0 lead in the match. The Terriers clinched the victory at No. 5 singles as Petrilli dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Cahi.
The Citadel recorded their lone point of the day at No. 3 singles as Diaz stopped a nine-match losing streak. Diaz fought out the 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-7) win over Collins. At No. 2 singles, Kernodle rallied to defeat Eason in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). The Terriers closed out the victory as Stubbs recorded the 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Dossetor at No. 1 singles.
Wofford returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 as they face the College of Charleston at 3 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The Citadel hits the road for a pair of conference matches beginning with an April 6 match at Davidson, followed by an April 7 match at UNC Greensboro.
