SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced today that College of Charleston’s Laura Borza has been named the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for April 3.
Borza, a freshman from Toronto, Canada, led the Cougars to three conference wins last week. She started the week with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Elon’s Kelley Moore at No. 2 singles, leading the team to a 5-2 win over the Phoenix. Borza then picked up a come-from-behind victory in a 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 over UNCG’s Erika Zabkar at No. 2 singles. Her win helped the Cougars top the Spartans 4-3 on Saturday. She followed the win with another three-set thriller on Sunday in leading Charleston to a 4-3 win over Davidson in a battle of the unbeatens. Borza topped Virginia Berry 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Borza is 15-3 in singles action this year, including a nine-match winning streak.
Other top performers include Chattanooga’s Anastasia Zhukova, Elon’s Whitney Butcher, Furman’s Lauren Osborne and Wofford’s Sabrina Smyers.
