LOUDERMILK PITCHES EIGHTH SHUTOUT IN LADY MOCS’ SWEEP
Chattanooga, Tenn. ? Chattanooga completed the sweep Saturday afternoon over the Furman Lady Paladins, winning game two 1-0.
Freshman pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (Locust Grove, Ga.) threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts. The win boosts her overall record to 21-10, 9-1 Socon.
The game remained scoreless after four-and-a-half innings, but that changed in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior first baseman Alyssa Edwards (Geneva, N.Y.), after picking up a double in the bottom of the second, walked to lead off. Junior Ashlan Clarkson (Chickamauga, Ga.) took first to pinch run for Edwards before scoring courtesy of sophomore third baseman Toni Hutchison’s (Madison, Tenn.) double to left center to boost Chattanooga to a 1-0 lead.
Furman’s Lynn Parmer recorded the lone hit for the Lady Paladins. Blake Murray was credited with the loss, dropping her record to 7-15.
Edwards and Hutchison recorded the two hits for Chattanooga, both doubles.
Chattanooga and Furman finish the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the four seniors will be honored .
Lauren Ross Tosses No-Hitter in Split with Georgia Southern
CULLOWHEE, N.C. ? Pitcher Lauren Ross threw the first no-hitter of her career helping Western Carolina softball split the Southern Conference doubleheader with Georgia Southern Saturday at the Catamount Complex. The Catamounts won the opening game 4-0 and fell in the second game 5-0. Western Carolina plays its final home game of the season when the Catamounts host Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Ross sat down 12 consecutive batters before a walk upset her attempt at a perfect game. She gave up two walks and struck out four to improve her season total to 99. Ross is now 10-7 on the year. She also hit her 10th homerun of the season and 21st of her career, which ties the school record for homeruns in a career.
Western Carolina is 24-31 overall and 7-10 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern improves to 23-27 and 8-8 in conference play.
The Catamounts plated all four of their runs in the first game in the opening frame. Mendy McKenzie led off with a walk and advanced to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Nikki Bost. McKenzie scored when Stephanie Beatty hit an RBI double, her 12th of the season, which breaks the single-season record. An RBI single by Mollie Fowler brought Beatty around to score the second run of the inning. Ross helped her cause by launching a homerun over the left field wall to score herself and Fowler.
Western Carolina wasn’t as fortunate in the second game. Starter Mendy McKenzie gave up four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work to put the Catamounts behind to start the game. She also took the loss and falls to 10-17 on the year.
Junior Savannah Filley relieved McKenzie in the second inning and closed out the game going 5.1 innings. Filley allowed one run on two hits and struck out two.
Georgia Southern scored two runs in the first inning thanks to a two-run homerun by the Eagles’ Robyn Siliga and two additional runs in the second off a two RBI double by Heather Smith. The Eagles scored their fifth run of the game in the fifth inning off a solo homerun by Jenny Side.
Mesko, Cougars take two from UNCG, 10-3 and 7-5
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Freshman Terri Mesko recorded 14 strikeouts to set a new College of Charleston single game record in the Cougars’ 10-3 win over UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference, before the College of Charleston won the nightcap, 7-5, at the UNCG Softball Stadium before 151 in Greensboro, N.C. The Cougars will play the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Mesko (16-9) scattered eight hits and issued two walks in seven innings of work for the win.
Kristie Shifflett, who hit a pair of doubles, was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the College of Charleston’s offense.
Jennifer Golden’s RBI-double to right center scored Shifflett in the first inning, and Cougars (31-20, 13-4 SoCon) would add runs each inning but the third and fourth.
Amber Shifflett’s single down the left field line scored Katie Pesature, and K. Shifflett had two-run producing double to score Izmena Cabrera and Mesko. Kolby Schooley blasted a three-run shot, her third career home run, over the left field fence to give Charleston the 7-0 lead.
The Spartans (25-32, 5-11 SoCon) would scratch out a pair of runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI-singles from Brittany Ausley and Jennifer Bonilla.
With bases loaded in the sixth, Brittany Small drew an RBI-walk to extend the Cougars’ lead to 8-2, before UNCG scored its final run of the game of a run scoring double from Heather Branche.
Cabrera’s two-run shot, her seventh of the season, to left field gave the Cougars the final margin.
Amber Harrell (10-13) took the loss for UNCG as she gave up seven runs ? all earned ? on six hits. She issued seven walks and struck out four.
The Spartans led 1-0 through two innings, before the College of Charleston answered with three runs in the top of third inning in Game 2. Shannon Howard’s two-run double scored Cabrera and A. Shifflett, and Katie Pesature’s sac fly scored Golden for the 3-1 edge.
Charleston added two more runs in the fifth on a miscue by shortstop Adrianne Audley which scored Golden who led off with a double up the middle and on Cabrera’s run-scoring single to center to score Small.
UNCG would narrow the margin to 5-4 in the fifth when Kara Clouser’s double to left center cleared the bases to score Bonilla, Leslie Furness and Lyndsay Mouse.
A two-run sixth inning would give the Cougars just enough to escape with the win off a pair of Spartan miscues. Shifflett, who reached on an error by Bonilla, subsequently scored on a fielding error by Laura Orlenderski. Howard’s double to right center scored Golden who reached on a single and advanced to third on the fielding error for final score of the game.
Katie Sansouci (10-4) scattered six hits, struck out two and issued a walk in 4 1/3 innings of work for the win. Howard, who earned her first save of the season, struck out one and gave up two hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Hannah Angel (5-9) took the loss as she gave up seven runs ? five earned ? on 11 hits. She issued four walks and struck out two in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Howard and Cabrera each had three hits in the 11-hit attack. Howard had three RBI and Cabrera had one.
Clouser, who was 1-for-3 with three RBI, led the Spartan offense.
