Mountaineer Men Capture Seven Appalachian Open Individual Titles

April 13, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. - The sophomore sprinting due of Charles Derrickson (Fayetteville, N.C./Pine Forest) and Daniel Neal (Fayetteville, N.C./Pine Forest) combined for three first-place and two second-place finishes as the Appalachian State University men's track and field team concluded its final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championships at the Appalachian Spring Open at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Friday.
The Mountaineers faced Winthrop, Lees-McRae, Mars Hill, Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson Newman, along with unattached competitors in the non-scoring meet.
Derrickson won both the 100 meter dash and 110 meter hurdles with times of 11.05 and 14.55, respectively. He added second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.95. Neal came in first in the 400 meter hurdles at 55.70 and second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.08.
Three Mountaineers ran to victory in the distance events, led by freshman Alec Meyer?s (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) close victory in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:04.33. Senior Rance Shuler (Robbinsville, N.C./Robbinsville) added another close win in the shorter 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.02, while sophomore Phil Mitchell (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) won the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:00.58. Freshman Andrew Yarchin (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) came in directly behind his teammate in the event with a time of 4:10.10.
Junior Justin Hunnicutt (Wilmington, N.C./Ashley) had ASU?s other individual victory with first place in the pole vault with a mark of 4.75 meters (15-07.00).
Appalachian will look for its sixth men?s conference outdoor championship in seven years as it stays home to host the Southern Conference Championships on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22 at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone.

Appalachian Women Grab Six Individual Victories at Appalachian Open

April 13, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's track and field captured six individual victories as it concluded its final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championships at the Appalachian Spring Open at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Friday.
The Mountaineers faced Winthrop, Lees-McRae, Mars Hill, Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson Newman in the non-scoring meet.
Freshmen Ashley McKiver and Chenel McFadden each picked up victories as McKiver grabbed her win in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.26 and McFadden leapt her way to victory in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 65.02, ranking her seventh in the ASU record books.
Senior Jenna Wrieden and sophomore Ashley Norris each grabbed wins in distance events. Wrieden won the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:48.35, while Norris won the 5000 meter run in 19:07.43.
In the field events, juniors Kaitlyn Heeke and Brittani Williams each picked up victories. Heeke won the pole vault with a mark of 3.34 meters (10-11.50), while Williams grabbed first place in the shot put with a toss of 14.04 meters (46-00.75).
The Mountaineer women added six second-place finishes at the meet, highlighted by one-two finishes in the 1500 meter run, 5000 meter run, and pole vault.
Appalachian will look for its sixth-straight women’s conference outdoor championship as it stays home to host the Southern Conference Championships on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22 at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone.
College of Charleston Women’s Outdoor Track & Field
CofC Posts Solid Performance
The College of Charleston track and field had a solid day at Chanticleer Classic on Saturday in Conway, S.C.
Wells Trompeter had a school record 2:20.42, followed by Amy Laughlin with a time of 2:22.20 ? a new personal best ? in the 800-meter run.
Summer Chambless had a javelin throw of 93-05 feet for a Top 10 performance, and she tied the school record in the pole vault with an 11-05 ? mark.
Alicia Sims and Heather Collier both had marks of 5-01 in the high jump, and Dominique Boone jumped 36-05 in the triple jump for a fourth place finish. Elizabeth Sanders had personal best in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:14.88.
The 4x100 meter team finished second with a time of :50.73, and the 4x400 meter relay team of Emily Jackson, Collier, Amy Laughlin and Boone set a new school record with a time of 4:02.20.
The Cougars will face the Southern Conference field in Boone, N.C., at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Apr. 21.

Freshmen and Sophomores Team Up to Destroy Record in Friday’s Action at the Sea Ray Relays
Knoxville, Tenn. ? The Citadel track and field team opened competition Friday in what is arguably one of the top-five track meets in the country by breaking the school record in the 4x1500m relay by more than five minutes. In field event action, senior Stephanie McNeill recorded a seventh-place finish in the hammer.
The women’s 4x1500m relay team finished fourth, running 20:37.54 as they competed against some of the top teams from the ACC and the BIG EAST. Opening up with freshman Natalie Wolin, followed by sophomore Megan Jenkins, the relay team topped the previous record of 25:38.08 set back in 2003.
The new record relay time was closed out with sophomore Erin Ritter and anchored by freshman Katheryn Gatewood. Placing fourth, The Citadel finished behind Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wake Forest.
In the throwing events, McNeill registered a seventh-place finish in the hammer with a mark of 160’ 0”. McNeill, who entered the year without having thrown longer than 154’, has yet to throw under the 160’ 0” mark this entire season.
Women’s DMR Sets School Record Before Inclimate Weather Cancels Sea Ray Relays
Knoxville, Tenn. ? The women’s distance medley relay team set a new school record Saturday at the Sea Ray Relays, running just before inclimate weather canceled most of the events on the final day of the meet. Track officials canceled most of Saturday’s events after a 24-minute delay due to the continued threat of inclimate weather in the Knoxville area.
The women’s distance medley relay team ran 12:39.85 as they finished 16th overall. That mark breaks the old record of 13:37.32, set back in 1999. The relay team of sophomore Megan Jenkins, junior Jodi Whittle and freshmen Katheryn Gatewood and Natalie Wolin set their second school record of the weekend as three of the four girls ran in the school record 4x1500m relay on Friday. Wolin anchored the DMR team with a 5:20 split in the final mile leg of the race.
The Citadel returns to action next weekend as the Bulldogs head to Boone, N.C. to compete in the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Appalachian State University on April 21-22. Alexis Moore Sets 200m, 400m School Records in Final Tune-Up for SoCon Championships
Conway, S.C. ? The Citadel’s Alexis Moore recorded a banner day at the Chanticleer Invitational Saturday, setting the school’s 200m and 400m records in the final tune-up for the Southern Conference Championships.
Moore won the 400m by running 57.38, shattering her own personal record by three seconds and breaking the school record by almost three-quarters of a second. The old school record was set by current teammate Jodi Whittle in 2005.
Moore continued to roll in the 200m, placing fifth with another school record time, running 25.12. That mark edges Whittle’s old school record time of 25.14 set back at the 2005 SoCon Championships.
On the men’s side, seniors Quintin Wright and Thomas Pressley finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the 100m dash as they both ran season-best times. Wright ran 10.96 while Pressley ran 10.97 as both men posted sub 11-second times for the first time in two years.
Pressley also had a fast time in the 200m, finishing ninth with a time of 22.32, his second-fastest time of the season.
Sophomore Shaquill Smith recorded a pair of runner-up finishes on the day. Smith’s jump of 6’ 2.75” in the high jump placed him second while he’s mark of 44’ 10.25” in the triple jump also gave him a second-place finish.
In the women’s 800m, Heather Harris placed sixth with a time of 2:33.12.

Ritchie Rewrites 400-Meters Record at Radford Invite
RADFORD, Va. ? Senior David Ritchie bettered his own school record in the 400-meters, as Davidson’s men’s track team competed at the Radford Collegiate Invite on Saturday afternoon.
Ritchie finished first in the 400 meters in 47.84, bettering his school-record time of 48.03 from the Charlotte Invitational earlier this season.
Sophomore Alex Hoyt, sophomore Kwame Som-Pinpong and junior Beaux Jones also earned first-place finishes for the Wildcat men. Hoyt finished first in the 1500-meters (4:01.74), while Som-Pimpong and Jones took top marks in field events. Pimpong placed first in the triple jump (12.89 meters), and Jones, the javelin (53.40 meters).
The Wildcat men will now gear up for the 2007 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Fri., April 21 and Sat., April 22 on the campus of Appalachian State University.

Wildcat women set New Mark in 4x100 Relay at Radford Invite
RADFORD, Va. ? The 4x100 relay team rewrote the school record once more, as Davidson’s women’s track team competed at the Radford Collegiate Invite on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Kristen Meister, sophomore Chieko Phillips, sophomore Kim Colley and junior Amaka Obidegwu bettered the school-record set earlier in the season at the Charlotte Invitational (50.07), finishing in a time of 48.87.
Phillips also finished second in the 200 meters in a time of 25.67, narrowly missing the Davidson standard in the event set by Katurri Phillips last season (25.60).
The Wildcat women will now gear up for the 2007 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Fri., April 21 and Sat., April 22 on the campus of Appalachian State University.

Phoenix Competes at UNC Fast Times Meet

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Elon University came away with several strong individual performances Saturday at the University of North Carolina’s Fast Times track and field meet.
Jennine Strange broke the Phoenix record in the 400-meter run, crossing the finish line in 58.46 seconds. That time placed Strange 6th overall and 5th among college participants in the event.
The Elon record was previously held by Rochelle Reid at 59.52 seconds, set back on May 1, 2004. Jessica Weaver placed 12th in the event, just shy of the old program milestone at 59.60 seconds.
Other top Phoenix finishes were turned in by Anna Mae Flynn in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (1st/11:39.98), Jessica Clendenning in the pole vault (2nd/11-11.75), Caitlin Beeler in the 3,000-meter run (3rd/10:28.02), Colleen McCarthy in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (3rd/11:53.85), Dominique Price in the 100-meter hurdles (5th/season-best 14.46 seconds), Alice Turner in the 400-meter hurdles (5th/season-best 1:03.40), Angela Carlberg in the discus throw (6th/129-10), Alissa Wilke in the 3,000-meter run (7th/10:52.36) and Katelyn Ealer in the 3,000-meter run (8th/10:54.29).

Barker, Lordi Earn Second-Place Finishes at Solid Orange Classic
Paladins to Compete at SoCon Championships Next Weekend

Clemson, S.C. - In a final tune-up before next week's Southern Conference Championships, the Furman track and field teams had a successful showing at the Solid Orange Classic at Clemson University's Rock Norman outdoor complex. Lindsey Barker and Megan Lordi each posted second-place showings at the event.
Barker crossed the finish line in 2:18.52 in the 800m run, which was good for second place overall. Lordi finished second in the 5000m run with her time of 20:00.70. Holly Stewart also competed for the Lady Paladins, running a time of 5:15.23 in the 1500m run to finish in seventh place overall.
On the men's side, Joseph Tenini produced the highest Furman finish with his third-place showing in the 1500m run. Tenini posted a time of 4:05.41. Teammates Jed Wilkerson (9th) and Jeff O'Connell (11th) also competed in that event. Wilkerson picked up a fifth-place finish in the 800m, crossing the finish line in 2:00.05. In the field events, Doug Sellars and Steve Adams finished in the top six in the discus throw. Sellars (5th) posted a mark of 40.17m and Adams (6th) a mark of 38.61m.
Furman heads to the ASU Track at Kidd Brewer Stadium on the campus of Appalachian State University to take part in the 2007 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The meet begins on Saturday, April 21.

Track & Field Claim Four Titles at Chanticleer Classic
CONWAY, S.C. ? Georgia Southern’s track and field team returns to Statesboro after claiming 18 top-five finishes, including four titles, at the one-day Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Classic.
Senior Nicole Brown (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) won two of Southern’s titles, the first coming from her inaugural Triple Jump of the season with a distance of 41’10”. Brown’s second crown was another event first, clocking in at 24.16 in the 200M. Junior Shamyria Ortiz (Newnan, Ga./Rowlett ? Rowlett, Texas) also posted a top-five finish in the event with a career best time of 24.89 for fourth place.
Ortiz achieved a second personal best when she ran a 12.29 in the 100M, beating her previous best of 12.35 by 0.06, claiming second place.
In the 800M, junior Carla Ballard (Morrow, Ga./Morrow) demolished her previous career best of 2:32.06 (achieved in 2005) by over 13 seconds, finishing in 2:18.60 for first place. Ballard’s mark ranks second in GSU’s record book, just one second behind Brittney Jett’s time of 2:17.68 (2003).
The fourth title for Georgia Southern came from freshmen Jessica Irizarry (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison) with a 131’09” Javelin throw.
GSU also dominated second and third place in three individual events. Senior Lauren Jacobs (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) and junior Dominique Thurman (Riverdale, Ga./Riverdale) competed in the Long Jump, achieving marks of 19’7.5” and 17’2.75”, respectively. Senior Emily Greeson (Calhoun, Ga./Gordon Central) threw the Shot Put 43’2” while newcomer Jennifer Charles (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Clay) finished just behind her with a distance of 41’1.75”.
The final back-to-back pair came from distance runners Abby Bloom (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) and Jessica Kerzie (Marietta, Ga./Walton) in the 1500M. Bloom finished second with a career best time of 5:02.04, with Kerzie clocking in close behind her at 5:08.41.
In the 400M, newcomer Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga./Lithonia) competed for the first time and finished second with a time of 58.49. Junior Monique Pitts (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood) also claimed a runner-up spot, throwing the Discus 142’08”.
Pitts best performance was in the Hammer Throw. Her mark of 157’07” is a new career best, 7’6” better than her previous high of 150’1”, and ranks third on GSU’s all-time list.
“This meet was really just a pre-conference meet for us and we used it to work on different things” said head coach Natalie Smith. “I’m really confident going into next weekend. I believe we’ll be able to duplicate what we did this weekend and get everyone on board for the conference meet.”
The Eagles will be competing in the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships April 21-22 in Boone, N.C. GSU hopes to claim their first ever conference title over the two-day meet.

Spartans prep for SoCon meet with outstanding day at Carolina Fast Times
CHAPEL HILL, NC ? Ryan Rodd and Xavier Rutz cracked the two-minute mark in the 800 meters for the first time in his career to highlight UNC Greensboro’s performances at the Carolina Fast Times on Saturday.
Rodd, a sophomore from West Hartford, CT, recorded a time of 1:58.90 for a 25th place finish and a career best. Rutz, a junior from Cary, NC, was right behind him in 28th at 1:59.33.
Keith Gruchacz and Justin Ruppe also had personal records in the 1500 meters. Gruchacz, a senior from Bridgewater, NJ, crossed with a time of 4:12.65, while Ruppe, a freshman from Rutherfordton, NC, finished in 4:15.42.
On the women’s side, Tessa Dispenette and Sherrika Jordan ran personal records in the 1500 meters. Dispennette, a sophomore from Pittsboro, NC, crossed the line in 5:06.34, nearly 10 seconds better than her previous best, to finish in 21st place. Jordan, a freshman from Charlotte, NC, crossed the line immediately after, logging a time of 5:08.11.
UNCG will compete next weekend at the Southern Conference Championships in Boone, NC.

Three Terriers shine at Appalachian Open Track Meet
BOONE, N.C. -- Brian Smith, of the Wofford men's track and field team finished fourth out of 22 runners in the 800 meter run while teammate Rickey Bunton notched a sixth place finish in the long jump at the Appalachian Open Track Meet Friday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Freshman Terrier Bryan Brooks also earned a top-10 finish in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:24.95 to beat over half of the 21-runner field in his event.
Smith, a sophomore, ran the 800 meters in 2:02.61 to earn his first top-5 finish of the season. Teammates Brooks and Justin Hunter also participated in the event and finished among the top-20 competitors.
Bunton, also a sophomore, set a mark of 6.40 meters in the long jump to finish sixth out of 14 participants.
The Appalachian Open Track Meet marks the last outing of the season for the track and field team before the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on April 21-22, which will be held in Boone, N.C.

Bosshardt notches top-10 finish at Appalachian Open
BOONE, N.C. -- Lauren Bosshardt of the Wofford women's track and field team earned a top-10 finish in the 800 meter run at the Appalachian Open Track Meet Friday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Bosshardt finished eighth out of an 18-runner field with a time of 2:42.40. Teammate Jessie Sahms also ran in the event and posted a 2:50.55, good enough for a 14th place finish.
The Appalachian Open Track Meet marks the last outing of the season for the track and field team before the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on April 21-22, which will be held in Boone, N.C.
