Chattanooga 6, Tennessee Tech 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team pulled off a doubleheader sweep of Kennesaw State and Tennessee Tech Tuesday, defeating each team by 6-1 counts.
The result was the same in each match as the Lady Mocs, 8-15, claimed the doubles point and five of six singles matches against each squad.
The early match against Kennesaw State was highlighted by Anastasia Zhukova’s 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Mercedes Cobos. Zhukova, nationally ranked at No. 39 this week, registered her 18th and 19th 6-love sets of the season.
Also recording singles victories for UTC were Lindsey Ballard at No. 2, Beata Knizat at No. 3, Bonnie Adams and No. 4 and Celeste Nicholson at No. 6. Knizat and Nicholson were taken to a third-set superbreaker.
Carolina Page picked up the Owls’ lone point of the match, defeating freshman Kate Ksiezopolski at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. KSU fell to 4-17 overall.
Tennessee Tech spotted UTC two team points right off the bat, as only four members of the Golden Eagles’ squad were available to compete.
The Lady Mocs swept the doubles portion of the match, including a default at No. 3. The top four singles matches were competed. Zhukova beat Margot Carter, 6-3, 6-2, Ballard posted a 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 win over Amy Anstey and Knizat moved down to No. 4 and defeated Evgenia Yartseva, 6-2, 6-0.
Tech, 4-17, defaulted at No. 5 and 6 singles, and Marina Ruiz got past Adams, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
UTC closes out the home portion of the schedule with another doubleheader Thursday. The Lady Mocs host Jacksonville State at 11:30 a.m. at the Champion’s Club and take on Western Carolina at 3:30 p.m. in a Southern Conference match at the UTC Tennis Complex.
Thursday marks the last home appearance for Zhukova, UTC’s lone senior.

Wofford 4, Appalachian State 3
April 10, 2007 - BOONE--SoCon rival Wofford squeaked past Appalachian State Tuesday afternoon on the strength of the Terriers' Adriane Hodges victory over ASU junior Anja Gugger in three sets.
After having her serve broken in the first game of the third set, Gugger fought off multiple match points before finally surrendering the winner in the 4-6, 6-3, 4-6 battle at No. 2.
Appalachian and Wofford, who had met last year in the SoCon Tournament where ASU advanced to the semifinals with a 4-3 win, picked up where they had left off in intensity. Wofford got the best of ASU early, winning the doubles point 3-0, including a scrappy 8-7 (7-4) tiebreaker win at No. 2.
The Mountaineers would not be easily stopped in singles competition. Monica Tomas, playing at No. 1 for the second-straight match, improved to 4-5 at the position with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Merry Ellen Henry. Freshman Amanda Cash won her fourth-straight singles match, at No. 3 over Cayley Wetzig. Lauren Holton gave the Mountaineer freshmen another win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4.
However, coming off a match-clinching win on Saturday against Chattanooga, freshman Caroline Mauch couldn't keep the ASU rookies perfect in singles, falling 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
Earlier in the match, junior Frances Blanton withdrew due to illness from her match at No. 5. Blanton won the first set 6-2, but was out of gas for the second set, and got behind 5-0 before being forced to retire. ASU's two singles losses combined with the lost doubles point set up Gugger and Hodges for the deciding match.
