SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced today that Furman’s Laura Gioia has been named the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for April 10.

Gioia, a sophomore from Tampa, Fla., led the Lady Paladins to two conference wins last week, making them the only unbeaten women’s team in the league. She tallied a 6-0, 6-3 win on April 3 over Western Carolina’s Tessie Salame at No. 1 singles while also picking up a doubles win with teammate Natasa Manojlovic. Gioia then added two wins to her record in a 6-1 win over College of Charleston in the battle of the unbeatens. She topped Chelsea Albertz 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and grabbed a doubles win, 8-6, at the No. 1 position. Gioia is 18-2 overall this season, 8-0 in conference singles matches and is also undefeated in conference doubles, with a 15-5 overall doubles record. Her wins propelled the Lady Paladins to extend their conference regular season win streak to 78 straight since March 27, 1999.

Other top performers include College of Charleston’s Holly Dowse, Elon’s Paige Kensrue and UNCG’s Erica Zabkar.
