Magin's career-best highlights UNCG's second day at Duke Asics

 

DURHAM, NC ? Carly Magin set a personal best in the 3000 meter steeplechase to highlight UNC Greensboro’s second day of competition at the Duke Asics Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

 

Despite windy and cold conditions, Magin crossed the line in 12:23.97, 12 seconds better than her previous best. The time was also good for 19th place.

 

On the men’s side, Justin Ruppe also recorded a personal best time in the steeplechase, crossing the line in 10:19.92. He placed 30th in the race, while teammate Ryan Rodd was 24th.

 

UNCG heads to Chapel Hill next Saturday for the Carolina Fast Times.

Wildcat Men's Track and Field Competes at Duke Invitational over Weekend

 

DURHAM, N.C.? The Davidson men's track and field team competed at the Duke/Asics Invitational on Friday and Saturday, with the 4x400-meter relay team leading the way for the Wildcats at Wallace Wade Stadium. Davidson placed at least one runner or field member in the top-25 of five different events over the weekend.

The 4x400-meter relay team earned the highest finish when the four-man team crossed the finish line in seventh place with a time of 3:18.28. Just last weekend the Wildcats set a school record in the event with a time of 3:18.01.

Individually, senior Jim Walter (Solon, Ohio) had the best finish of either the runners or field members when he placed 11th in the discus. The senior school-record holder in the event picked up a throw of 141' 6", good for 11th out of 33 throwers.

Fellow senior Douglas Noreen (Apex, N.C.) continued his strong senior season with a top Wildcat time in the 1500-meter. He crossed the finish line with a time of 3:55.36 to earn an 18th place finish on Friday afternoon.

Another senior, Cisco Morales (Santiago, Chile), competed in the 400-meter hurdles and came in with a final time of 57.79 to earn a top-25 finish with a 24th place mark.

Finally, senior John Bialas (Auburn, Mass.) and JinHan Justin Song (Seoul, Korea) also captured top-25 performances for Davidson over the weekend. Bialas, who competed in the long jump, picked up an 18th place finish with a jump of 20' 7 3/4". Song ran in the 200-meter and registered a time of 22.58, good for 16th out of 58 runners in the event.

Davidson next heads to Radford, Va. for the Radford Invitational, which takes place on Saturday, Apr. 14.

Burns Sets NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark, Martin School Record at Duke Invitational

 

DURHAM, N.C. ? Junior captain Brenna Burns finished sixth in the 5000 meters in an NCAA qualifying time of 16:51.35, as the Davidson Wildcat women's track and field team competed at the Duke Asics Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Burns is the first woman Wildcat runner to qualify for the NCAA regional meet this season, joining freshman Kristen Meister who qualified in the high jump at the Wake Forest Open with a mark of 1.75 meters.

"Obviously, I am thrilled for Brenna," head coach Jen Straub said. "It's another great accomplishment for her and for our team as well!"

Sophomore Kennesia Martin set a new school record with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 11.54 meters (37-10.50). Martin bested her own record in the event, a jump of 11.46 meters (37-7.25) from last season.

Meister finished fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.70 meters, while junior Amaka Obidegwu finished ninth in the 400 meters (developmental) with a time of 59.39.

The women tracksters will return to action on April 13 at the Appalachian Spring Open.

 

The Citadel Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

 

The Citadel Track and Field Wins Five Events at Furman Invitational

 

Greenville, S.C. ? The Citadel’s split squad track and field team won five events at the Furman Invitational on an unusually cold Saturday afternoon in Greenville. Junior Tasha Sanders set a personal record in the long jump while Shaquill Smith, the 2006 Southern Conference high jump champion, won that event.

 

Sanders’ mark of 15’ 5.5” in the long jump is a personal-best jump for her, besting her previous record mark of 15’ 4.25” set at this year’s Coastal Carolina Invitational on March 10. Sanders also won the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.52 and placed fourth in the 200m, running 27.24. The Summerville, S.C. native also finished second in the shot put with a mark of 37’ 9.5”.

 

Sophomore Shaquill Smith, last year’s Southern Conference Champion in the high jump, set a height of 6’ 4” to win the event by two inches. Smith, who has not competed until now due to spring football practice, also placed ninth in the long jump with a mark of 17’ 10”. A two-sport standout for The Citadel, Smith is also the starting cornerback on The Citadel’s football team.

Another two-sport star in the making, Andre Roberts made his track and field debut Saturday as he finished third in the 400m with a time of 50.91. Roberts is a starting wide receiver on the school’s football team.

 

Roberts was surrounded by Bulldogs in the 400m as The Citadel placed runners first, second, third and fourth in the event. Junior Jonathan Vallejo won the race with a time of 50.49, followed by runner-up Bryan Hladik who ran 50.64. Roberts placed third and Myron Canton followed Roberts with a time of 52.42.

 

The Citadel finished 1-2 in the 800m as Matt Haight won the race with a time of 1:59.79. Zach Harten immediately followed Haight with a runner-up finish time of 1:59.82.

 

Freshman Emily Green set a new personal-best mark in the hammer by more than two feet with a throw of 127’ 6”. That tops her previous best throw of 125’ 4” set at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on March 9.

 

The Bulldogs will split squads again next weekend with one group headed to the coveted Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. and the second group competing at the Chanticleer Classic in Conway, S.C. McNeill Sets NCAA Qualifying Mark for Second Straight Weekend as Bulldogs Close Out Florida Relays

 

Gainesville, Fla. ? Senior Stephanie McNeill set an NCAA Regional qualifying mark for the second consecutive weekend as the Bulldogs completed competition at the 63rd Annual Florida Relays.  Meanwhile, sophomore Monique Edwards set a season-high mark in the discus.

 

McNeill finished fifth in the shot put, throwing 47’ 2.25”. That mark is a season-high throw for the Summerville, S.C. native and is the second throw this season in which she has surpassed the NCAA Regional Qualifying standard.

 

The men’s sprint medley relay team finished fourth overall, third among collegiate teams, posting a time of 3:33.35. The relay team won their heat and was only topped by Delaware State and South Carolina in the collegiate ranks. The women’s sprint medley relay placed 12th overall, 10th among collegiate teams, as they ran 4:23.35.

 

Edwards placed seventh in the discus, throwing a season-long mark of 128’ 2”. That mark is less than three feet short of her personal record mark of 131’ 0”, a mark she set last year as a freshman which is second in the school’s all-time charts.

 

The men’s 4x800m relay team set a season-high mark by 15 seconds, running 8:05.72. The relay team of Zach Johnson, Stephen Dickey, Charles Kutz and Will Wilson finished seventh overall. The women’s 4x800m relay team of Katheryn Gatewood, Erin Ritter, Megan Jenkins and Natalie Wolin finished eighth, running 9:57.26.

Furman Hosts 9th Annual Furman Invitational

 

Greenville, S.C. - On a unseasonably cold and blustery day at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track & Field and Kelsey-West Track on the campus of Furman University, track & field enthusiasts got their fill as runner Alan Webb became the first person to break the four-minute mile on a South Carolina track with his time of 3:57.83.

Webb was the lone runner in the 12-man field to break four minutes in the ASICS Blue Shoes Elite Mile Run, part of several weekend activities to raise money for Furman's Blue Shoes Track Scholarship program. Approximately 3,000 people were on hand to witness the Elite Mile race.

Despite temperatures in the low 40s and gusting winds, the 9th Annual Furman Invitational proved a success. In the collegiate meet, seven meet records fell, all on the women's side. Furman's own Chibuzo Agoucha broke her own records in both the long jump and the triple jump, with marks of 5.80m and 11.77m, respectively.

Lady Paladin Page Bridges posted a time of 11:10.32 in the 3000m steeplechase, topping the old record by 15 seconds. The Furman women had three of the top four times in the 800m run. Lindsey Barker won the event, crossing the finish line in 2:19.08, while McKenzie Sharpe was close behind with a time of 2:19.55. In fourth place was Rebecca Mullen with a mark of 2:21.91.

In the women's 5000m run, Lady Paladin Holly Stewart ran an 18:07.93 in a first-place finish. Teammate Guinn Garret took third place with a mark of 18:40.24.

The East Tennessee State women had a very successful meet, breaking four meet records. Jenny Knox (100m dash), Nae-Nae Bailey (200m dash), Anna Marie Ricciardi (high jump) and Brook Beraducci (shot put) all set new Furman Invite marks.

On the men's side, four Paladins earned first-place finishes. Joseph Tenini outlasted teammate Alex Plasencia for first place in the 5000m run with a time of 15:31.78. Plasencia crossed the finish line in 15:39.31 after the pair had been neck-and-neck for the majority of the race. In the 3000m steeplechase, Eric Albrecht turned in the fastest time of 9:29.86. Dustin Gourdin won the triple jump with a mark of 12.54m after finishing second in the long jump. In the javelin throw, David Moseley beat the field by nearly 2.5 meters with his throw of 48.17m.

The Furman track & field teams will compete at the Solid Orange Classic on the campus of Clemson University on Saturday, April 14.

 

Chattanooga Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

 

Track Claims Three Titles at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Chattanooga men’s and women’s track teams claimed three titles at the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday afternoon and dominated the 1500 meter races.

The Lady Mocs, led by Sabrina Lefort, swept the top five spots in the women’s 1500 meter run while Tim Clark led four Chattanooga runners to top five finishes in the men’s race.

Lefort moved past teammate Kathleen Turchin in the Southern Conference standings taking over the top spot with a time of 4:37.09. Turchin improved her time by nearly two seconds and was the runner-up at 4:37.85. Emily Wood improved her time by nearly eight second finishing third at 4:38.99 while Lanni Marchant was fourth at 4:40.33 and Shelley Taylor was the fifth finisher for Chattanooga at 4:41.13. She improved her previous season-best time by more than seven seconds.

In the men’s race, Tim Clark took first in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:59.25. Jeff Taylor placed third at 4:02.16 while David Moore was fourth with a time of 4:04.69 and Blake Ketron was fifth at 4:05.70.

In the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase, Katie Williams claimed a top spot at 11:11.10 and moves to second in the league standings. Amanda Alexander place third in her first 400 meter Hurdles of the season with a time of 1:08.37. Wood was the Lady Mocs’ top finisher in the 800 meters placing fourth in a time of 2:16.96 and Brandon Golder was fifth in the men’s 100 meter Dash at 11.22 seconds. Michael Mentz placed sixth in the 800 meters at 1:56.76 followed by Tim Clark in eighth at 1:58.06.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville as a final warm-up before the Southern Conference championships hosted by Appalachian State on Saturday, April 21 in Boone, N.C.

 

Western Carolina Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

 

Catamount Track & Field Posts 27 Podium Finishes; Women Place Second, Men Third at Clemson

 

Clemson, S.C. - Led by six first-place finishes among 14 podium performances, the Western Carolina women posted a second-place finish at Saturday's Clemson Invitational. The Catamount men used 13 podium finishes, including a first-place showing in the javelin by Tyler Ferguson, to finish third at the one-day event.

Additionally, WCU's men scored three top seasonal performances at the meet, while the women had five top performances.

The host Clemson Tigers took both the men's and women's competitions, scoring 79.5 points to place ahead of Western (49), Appalachian State (43) and Georgia (29.5) on the women's side. With 71 points, Clemson's men edged Appalachian State in second with 48 points, followed by Western Carolina (39), Georgia (35), and Virginia Tech (5).

All six of Western's first-place finishes on the women's side of competition came on the track. Junior Raquel Ramseur won the 400-meter dash (54.87), while classmate Kerrie Savery captured the 800-meter run in 2:12.13. Senior Deanna Kulesz won the 1,500-meter run with a season-best time of 4:37.73, while freshman Lindsay Groce earned her first-ever, first-place run in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:38.41.

Rounding out the top finishes for Western was senior Asia Davis, who won her third 400-meter hurdle event of the spring (1:01.43). Davis also ran second in the 100-meter hurdles. Also, Tierra Johnson, Annie Bailey, and Tangelia Johnson teamed with Savery to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:00.54.

Freshman Sherrell Froneberger posted a pair of runner-up finishes in both the 100- and 200-meter dash events, clocking a WCU season-best time of 11.98 in the shorter of the two events. Junior Michaela Hall recorded a season-best in the hammer throw, recording a distance of 44.36m (145-6) for a third-place showing, while senior Sharhonda Bell tallied the best shot put mark of the season at 36.78m (120-8).

On the men's side, senior Tyler Ferguson led a 1-2-3 finish for WCU in the javelin. Ferguson's season-best mark of 53.19m (174-6) was the second-best for a Catamount this season and just edged teammates David Bowles (49.11m, 161-1) in second and Matt Evans (46.21m, 151-7) in third. Evans added a second-place showing in the men's high jump, clearing 2.0 meters (6-6.75). Junior Chris Page recorded a pair of third-place showings in the men's shot put (14.11m, 46-3.5) and discus (44.46m, 145-10).

Last week's SoCon Men's Track Athlete of the Week, sophomore Manteo Mitchell, posted a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash while Aaron Grant (1:56.31) and Dan Fassinger (3:59.47) ran second in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs, respectively. Sophomore John Oros and senior Mike Malone each ran third in the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles, respectively.

Freshman Dominique Young recorded the quickest time in the 100-meter dash this season for WCU, tripping the tape in 10.62 for a fifth-place finish, while senior Dylan Hermelee ran 9:56.71 in the 3,000-meter steeple chase to lead the school's top times list. Rounding out the top seasonal performances recorded by WCU student-athletes on Saturday were Rashad Herndon, who leaped a season-best 6.77m (22-2.5) in the long jump and Mike Osteen, who vaulted 4.60m (15-1.0), tying his seasonal best in the pole vault.

Western is scheduled to return to Clemson this weekend, April 13-14, for the Solid Orange Classic.

Appalachian Men Grab Second at Clemson Meet

 

April 7, 2007 - CLEMSON, S.C. ? Led by four individual first-place finishes, Appalachian State University men’s track and field placed second at the Clemson Outdoor Standard Track Meet at Rock Norman Track on Saturday.

The Mountaineers finished in second with 48 points. Clemson took the team title with 71 points, Western Carolina came in third with 39 points, Georgia placed fourth with 35 points and Virginia Tech came in fifth with five points.

Senior Anthony Greer recorded an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the shot put for the second-straight week with a victory in the event with a throw of 17.02 meters (55-10.25). Greer added a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 52.54 (172-04). Junior Wes Kiser placed third in the event with a toss of 54.51 meters (178-10). Kiser added a second-place finish in the discus with a mark of 45.77 meters (150-02).

Sophomore Charles Derrickson grabbed a victory in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14:06. Fellow sophomore, Phil Mitchell placed first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.29. Junior Ryan O’Keefe also took home an individual title with first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:31.75. Senior Mark Maddox placed third in the event with a time of 9:50.79.

ASU continued its success in the distance events as senior Brendon Helms placed third in the 5,000 meter run and freshman Andrew Yarchin came in fourth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:59.57.

Junior Joel Gaddy and sophomore Ricky Harris each landed in the top three in two events as Harris placed second in the long jump with a leap of 7.04 meters (23-01.25) and third in the triple jump with a mark of 13.97 meters (45-10.00). Gaddy came in second in the triple jump with a leap of 14.29 meters (46-10.75) and third in the long jump with a mark of 6.91 meters (22-08.00).

The Mountaineers return home for their final tune up before the Southern Conference Championships as they host the Appalachian Spring Open on Friday, April 13 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

 

Mountaineer Women Place Third at Clemson Meet

 

April 7, 2007 - CLEMSON, S.C. ? Junior Meghan Gaffney set a track record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as Appalachian State University women’s track and field placed third at the Clemson Outdoor Standard Track Meet at Rock Norman Track on Saturday.

The Mountaineers finished in third with 43 points. Clemson took the team title with 79.50 points, Western Carolina followed in second with 49 points and Georgia placed fourth with 29.50 points.

Gaffney captured one of two of Appalachian’s individual victories Saturday with first place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10.57.75, breaking the track record of 10:59.89 set in 2003. The Mountaineers swept the top-three spots as senior Jenna Wrieden came in second with a time of 11:32.28 and junior Christina Post placed third with a time of 12:01.18.

ASU grabbed six points in the 1,500 meter run as it captured second, third and fourth place. Junior Jennifer Povick came in second with a time of 4:40.33. She was followed by sophomore Hannah Parks in third with a time of 4:42.41 and freshman Melissa Kopec in fourth at 4:55.44. Povick added a third-place finish the 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.14.

Junior Shaniqua Wallace had the other individual title with a first place finish the shot put with a throw of 13.07 meters (42-10.75). Also in the throws events, junior Brittani Williams came in second in the discus with a throw of 41.62 meters (136-06), while junior Lily Tallent placed fourth in the event with a throw of 39.47 meters (129-06). Freshman Adrianne Alexander captured second in the hammer throw with a toss of 45.17 meters (148-02) and Tallent came in fourth in the javelin throw at 34.92 meters (114-07).

Freshman Danielle Thorpe added three points for Appalachian with third place in the long jump with a lead of 5.35 meters (17-06.75) and fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.52 meters (37-09.50). Her classmate, Chenel McFadden placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.96.

The Mountaineers return home for their final tune up before the Southern Conference Championships as they host the Appalachian Spring Open on Friday, April 13 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Clendenning, Phoenix Excel at Duke Invitational

The Phoenix record seven season-best performances

DURHAM, N.C. ? Elon senior Jessica Clendenning achieved the qualifying mark for next month’s NCAA Division I East Regional for the fourth consecutive meet, placing third in the pole vault at the Duke Invitational track and field meet, held Friday and Saturday. Clendenning finished with a height of 3.80 meters (12-05.5).

The Phoenix recorded seven season-best performances despite challenging weather conditions that included cold temperatures throughout the weekend. Saturday morning saw a wind chill of 27 degrees and briefly showed a glimpse of snow.
 
Jessica Weaver (60.22 seconds in the 400-meter run), Caitlin Beeler (4:59.12 in the 1,500-meter run and 17:46.11 in the 5,000-meter run), Anna Mae Flynn (17:47.16 in the 5,000-meter run), Alissa Wilke (18:44.39 in the 5,000-meter run), Katelyn Ealer (18:45.47 in the 5,000-meter run) and Colleen McCarthy (12:04.42 in the steeplechase) all tallied their best performances of the season.
 
Clendenning (3rd/pole vault), Beeler (9th/5,000 meters), Flynn (10th/5,000 meters) and Jennine Strange (10th/800 meters/2:22.05) gave Elon four top-10 performances.

 

College of Charleston Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

 

The College of Charleston’s women’s track and field team faced cold temperatures and blustery winds at the 9th Annual Furman Invitational, but had good times, according to head coach Amy Schuckert.

 

Summer Chambless finished with a time of 13.88 seconds in the 100-meter dash, behind East Tennessee’s Jenny Knox who broke the meet record with her 12.45 time.

 

Heather Collier and Emily Jackson finished the 200-meter dash with times of 26.60 and 26.71 for second and third, respectively.

 

Amy Laughlin had a Top 5 finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.02 and finished first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:51.71.  Wells Trompeter trailed Laughlin with a time of 4:54.76, and Heather Clark posted a 5:05.31 to finish fourth.

 

Katie Hedley crossed the finish line to finish second in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:31.66.  Karen Corson finished fourth with a time of 18:49.38.

 

The College of Charleston had first place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays with times of 50.22 and 4:04.28, respectively.

 

In the field events, Dominique Boone and Heather Collier jumped 5-0 for second place tie in the high jump, while Alicia Sims had a mark of 4-10.

 

Jessica Cumbee took top honors in the pole vault with a mark of 9-06. Boone had second place mark of 36-07 ? in the triple jump. 

 

Chambless had the top mark in the javelin throw at 92 feet, and Lyndsay Smith and Clark had marks of 50-05 and 34-04, respectively,

 

The College of Charleston will next compete at the Chanticleer Classic on Apr. 14 in Conway, S.C.

 

Georgia Southern Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

 

Bloom Resets School Record in Steeplechase

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? Three Georgia Southern track and field members competed in two events on Saturday (Apr. 7) in the final day of the Florida Relays at James G. Pressley Stadium at Percy Beard Track.  Over 3,000 collegiate and high school athletes had competed throughout the weekend, including more than 30 women’s college teams.

On Friday (Apr. 6), senior Emily Greeson (Calhoun, Ga./Gordon Central) took the Shot Put title with a career best 46’2.5”.  Also with a top finish, sophomore Jasmine Lightning (Dacula, Ga./Dacula) posted a height of 5’2.25” in the High Jump, finishing in fourth place.

Continuing that success into Saturday, junior Abby Bloom (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) rewrote her own school record in the Steeplechase with a fifth place time of 11:35.24.  Her previous personal best and GSU record stood at 11:47.51, achieved on March 9 against Coastal Carolina.  Senior Jessica Kerzie (Marietta, Ga./Walton) also competed in the event, coming in at seventh with a time of 12:35.78.

The final finish of the day was a top-ten posting from freshman Jessica Irizarry (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison).  With a distance of 46’2.5”, Irizarry claimed sixth place in the Javelin.

Georgia Southern will be competing one more time before the Southern Conference Championships (Apr. 21-22) when they travel to Charleston, S.C. on April 14 for the Buccaneer Invitational.
