DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson and College of Charleston won three singles matches each, but the Cougars claimed the doubles point to end the Wildcats? eight dual winning streak and hand them their first SoCon setback with a 4-3 decision Saturday afternoon at Covington Tennis Courts. The loss was also the only for Davidson at home this season as it drops to 15-5 overall and
5-1 in the league, while Charleston moves to 15-5 and remains unbeaten in the conference improving to 6-0.
Each of the three doubles contests were decided by 8-3 margins, but it was the Cougars? triumphs in the first and third-seeded bouts that proved to be the difference makers. Davidson?s lone win in partner?s play came from the freshman tandem of Virginia Berry and Teresa Wang, who defeated Laura Borza and Link Leskosky.
Trailing 1-0 entering the singles competition, the Wildcats tied things at
1-1 following Kelsey Linville?s 6-1, 6-1 decision over Chelsea Albertz at the top spot. After Linville?s impressive play, four of the next five would go the distance with each club winning a pair of three setters. The only bout other than the top-seeded contest decided in two sets was Anna Lee Evans 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Davidson?s Teresa Wang.
Despite the loss, sophomores Michele Fanney and Lora Dushanova each recorded three-set victories for the Wildcats. Dushanova, an All-SoCon performer a year ago, upped her career league mark to a perfect 14-0 with a 6-3, 4-6,
6-3 triumph over Amanda Baker.
Davidson will conclude its 2007 regular season slate with a three-match road swing beginning with a 3 p.m. affair at UNC Greensboro April 4. The Cougars also return to action Wednesday as they host SoCon foe Wofford at 1:30 p.m.
