Furman 6, The Citadel 1
Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel’s James Eason recorded the lone Bulldog point on the day as 59th-ranked Furman Paladins recorded their sixth consecutive win in a 6-1 defeat of The Citadel Saturday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
The Citadel (2-15, 0-4 Southern) scored their lone point on the day as junior James Eason recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over Andy Sobczyk at No. 2 singles. No. 59 Furman (12-9, 4-1 SoCon) won all but one doubles match and one singles contest.
The Citadel’s lone doubles win came as No. 52 Daniel Dossetor and Eason topped Ryan Friend and Andy Sobczyk, 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, Furman’s 57th-ranked Bo Ladyman and Brian Crook won over The Citadel’s Martin King and Frederic Petrilli, 8-2. Clinching the doubles point for the Paladins was Andy Juc and Scott Kahler at No. 3 doubles, with the 8-2 win over Alberto Diaz and Derek Jose.
Furman’s Daniel Knause strolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, giving Furman the 2-0 advantage. At No. 6 singles, Michal Kociecki won over Petrilli, 6-2, 6-2. Furman clinched the match victory as 68th-ranked Andy Juc handed Dossetor his fourth loss of the year to a ranked opponent in a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
The Citadel returns to action on Tuesday, April 3 when the Bulldogs host Wofford at 1 p.m. No. 59 Furman will play at No. 75 College of Charleston on Sunday, April 1 at 1 p.m. in a battle of the Southern Conference’s ranked teams.
Wofford 6, Charlotte 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford men’s tennis team took all but one singles match to earn a 6-1 win over Charlotte at Reeves Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
Wofford (9-5, 3-2) took two of the three doubles matches to take the first point for a 1-0 lead. Richard Cahi and George Kernodle recorded the first win with an 8-5 victory over Roy Sichel and Darren Mansell at No. 2. Andrew Stubbs and Alex Fridzon followed with an 8-5 win at No. 1 over Ryan Johnson and Felix Bernhoerster to clinch the point.
Despite dropping the first set in four of the six singles contests. Wofford went on to take every singles match except for the No. 1 contest.
At No. 2, Kernodle defeated Mansell in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 and Scott Collins followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Johnson at No. 3. Wofford needed only one more point to clinch the match, but they got three instead.
Fridzon, Cahi and Williams all lost their first set, but rebounded to take the final two in their respective singles wins. Fridzon came back from an 0-6 first set loss to notch an 0-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Aljoscha Jelinek at the No. 4 spot.
At No. 5, Cahi defeated Dorian Host 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 for his fifth singles win of the season. Freshman Christopher Williams, Wofford’s No. 6 player, took a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision from Brad Clinard to complete the Wofford victory.
“We did a great job today in defeating a very good and well coached Charlotte team,” head coach Rod Ray said. “I am especially proud of our effort today after yesterday’s tough loss. We played well in the doubles and fought very hard in all six of the singles matches. We showed a lot of heart and perseverance in working so hard today.
“We have some great matches coming up and we are still improving which makes a statement about the character of our players. Without a doubt, they believe in themselves and each other.”
Wofford will take a three-game road trip to the South Carolina coast beginning on April 3 against The Citadel. The Terriers will follow with an April 4 matchup against College of Charleston and an April 5 contest against Coastal Carolina.

Stetson 4, Davidson 3
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Despite sweeping the doubles competition for the eighth time this season, Davidson suffered its fourth straight defeat, and second consecutive 4-3 setback as Stetson took the non-conference match over the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Covington Tennis Courts. Davidson dropped to 6-13 in the 2007 campaign, while Stetson won its 11th match in the past 12 to push its overall mark to 15-6.
Davidson bumped its overall team doubles mark to 38-19 when it jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches against the Hatters. The duo of John Bolton and Flaviu Simihaian led the way, earning their first win of the season over a ranked opponent with an 8-6 win over the 84th ranked team of Marcus Echtler and Filip Kricka.
Ethan Jaffee and Sam Burns continued their solid play since Jaffee returned to the lineup a few matches ago. The sophomore and freshman won for the fifth time in the past six matches when they earned an 8-7 win at the No. 2 doubles spot.
Bolton and Burns carried over their doubles wins with victories in singles play at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Burns, who improved to 9-10 on the season in dual singles matches, earned a 7-6, 6-1 triumph over Danai Stamp, while Bolton won his first set 7-6, before taking the match by defeat over Echtler.
The Hatters though, used wins at No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 to take the match. Davidson did not give the match up easily, as Simihaian, Scott Myers and Eric Noble each forced a deciding third set before falling in the end.
The Wildcats will now finish out the regular season with three straight conference matches, starting with a trip to UNC Greensboro on Sunday, April 1 for a 1 p.m. match. Davidson currently sits at 1-5 in league play and will be looking to position itself for a good seed for the upcoming conference tournament on April 19-22.

Appalachian State 4, UNC Greensboro 3
GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro’s trio of Andrey Bubnov, Arsel Kumdereli and Jason Steinhorn won singles’ matches in straight sets, but Appalachian State squeaked past for a 4-3 win in Southern Conference men’s tennis action Saturday afternoon.
The decisive point game at No. 6 singles when David Doverspike defeated William Adeimy in a third set tiebreaker. Adeimy won the opening set, 6-3, before Doverspike won the second, 7-5. The third set went back and forth with Adeimy forcing the tiebreaker by holding serve at 6-5. Doverspike, however, finally won the match in the tiebreaker, 7-4.
Bubnov had topped Trent Constance at No. 1 singles, 6-1 and 6-1, while Kumdereli rolled past Peter Jacobs at No. 4 singles, 6-0 and 7-5. Steinhorn topped Lee Floyd at No. 5 singles by a pair of 6-4 scores.
UNCG will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Davidson at 1 pm.
