FRIDAY
Elon 6, Appalachian State 1
March 30, 2007 - BOONE--Appalachian State was the latest victim in Elon's tear through the Southern Conference, as the Phoenix defeated the Mountaineers 6-1 in Boone on Friday. ASU suffered just its second conference setback, and is now 3-2 in league play.
The Mountaineers came out strong, fighting Elon for the doubles point with the strength of a 8-6 Peter Jacobs/Trent Constance win at No. 2. However, the Phoenix prevailed in the other two matches to earn the first point of the afternoon.
In most of the singles matches, Elon overpowered ASU in straight sets. In a showdown of two of the Southern Conference's best No. 4 players, Elon's Sebastian Bredberg defeated Peter Jacobs (Pretoria, South Africa) to hand the freshman his first conference loss, 6-4, 6-4.
Just as it appeared that Appalachian might get swept at home, SoCon player of the week Dimitar Dimitrov (Sofia, Bulgaria) battled for an impressive 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 win at No. 3 over Mason Schermerhorn, who had entered the day with a 14-2 overall record. The win extended Dimitrov's unbeaten singles streak to seven-straight, and improves the senior's record to 12-3.
Appalachian drops to 10-6 overall with the loss, 3-2 in conference. Elon improves to 16-2 and 7-0 in SoCon play. The Mounatineers will stay in league for their next match, at UNC Greensboro. The teams will take the courts March 31 at noon.

Chattanooga 5, Wofford 2
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 conference match to Chattanooga Friday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.
Despite strong doubles outings from Andrew Stubbs and Alex Fridzon at No. 1 and Scott Collins and Jeff Muthig at No. 3, Chattanooga took two of the three matches to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. The Mocs notched a win at No. 2 doubles, but Collins and Muthig kept Wofford alive by holding on for a 9-8 (8-6) win at No. 3. The point was decided at No. 1 where Stubbs and Fridzon staved off defeat and rallied from a 7-6 deficit to force a tiebreak, but could not overcome the Mocs pairing of Mark Fynn and Tim Mittaga and fell 9-8 (7-4).
Both Stubbs and Christopher Williams earned singles victories for Wofford (12-5, 3-2). Stubbs topped Badr Bouabdellah 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1 for his fourth straight win and his eighth overall this season. With the win, Stubbs improves to 4-1 in conference play. Williams followed with a victory at No. 6 singles, defeating Pavel Vostrikov 6-3, 6-4.
“Today’s match was a very tough and exciting college tennis match,” head coach Rod Ray said. “The doubles point was very close and almost every singles match was very close. UTC did a great job and was a little better than us today.
“Both teams displayed good energy and both teams were well prepared. We have a lot of matches coming up during our spring break and we are going to embrace the challenges and work hard to improve.”
Wofford will conclude its five-game homestand Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest against Charlotte at Reeves Tennis Center.
