Chattanooga Goes 2-0 on Day One at USF adidas Invitational

EDWARDS LEADS LADY MOCS TO 7-0 WIN OVER LONG ISLAND

Clearwater, Fla. ? Senior first baseman Alyssa Edwards (Geneva, N.Y.) went three-for-four with four RBIs in the Chattanooga’s 7-0 win over Long Island University Thursday afternoon.

 

Edwards continues to lead the team with 17 RBI on the season. She also has 21 hits on 64 at bats.

 

Chattanooga recorded 10 hits, getting two from junior right fielder Tara Tembey (Folsom, Calif.).

 

Freshman pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (Locust Grove, Ga.) recorded her second shutout of the season, tallying seven strikeouts on 27 batters faced and improving her record to 8-4.

 

The Lady Mocs (12-12) started their run in the bottom of the third with sophomore center fielder Ashley Cuticchia (Rising Fawn, Ga.) and freshman shortstop Tia Blosser (Knoxville, Tenn.) reaching on back-to-back walks before Edwards sent the two home on her triple to right field to take the 2-0 lead.

 

Senior second baseman Brittney Whittier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple down the right line but was stranded after three straight outs.

 

Chattanooga came alive again in the fifth led by Edwards’ two-run single up the right side sending senior left fielder Jeannie Cochran (Maryville, Tenn.) and Cuticchia home to make the score 4-0. 

 

Tembey also got a base hit, scoring on sophomore third baseman Toni Hutchison’s (Madison, Tenn.) single. Whittier also was sent home on the single making the score 7-0.

 

Long Island was led by Vanessa Mejia, who had three singles on three at bats.

 

The Lady Mocs face Mercer at 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening to close out day one of the USF adidas Invitational.

 

 

 

CHATTANOOGA DEFEATS MERCER 9-1 IN SIX INNINGS

Clearwater, Fla. ? The Lady Mocs scored nine runs on 11 hits and three errors to defeat Mercer 9-1 Thursday evening.

 

Chattanooga (13-12) jumped above .500 led by strong hitting by freshmen shortstop Tia Blosser (Knoxville, Tenn.) and catcher Brittany Eason (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and sophomores third baseman Toni Hutchison (Madison, Tenn.) and Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) with two hits each.

 

The Lady Mocs scored in the first inning off of a senior first baseman Alyssa Edwards’ (Geneva, N.Y.) double to right field scoring sophomore center fielder Ashley Cuticchia (Rising Fawn, Ga.), who reached on a fielder’s choice.

 

The Bears’ Jamie Madruga hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the first to tie the score 1-1 going into the second.

 

But Chattanooga answered back in the form of five runs on four hits and one error. Eason reached on a hit and scored on a Hutchison double. Hutchison scored on an error by Mercer making the score 3-1.

 

Upchurch, senior left fielder Jeannie Cochran (Maryville, Tenn.) and Cuticchia all scored on a Blosser double after Cochran reached on a sacrifice bunt and Cuticchia was intentionally walked, making the score 6-1.

 

In the top of the third, the Lady Mocs scored two more runs after senior second baseman Brittney Whittier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) walked and Hutchison had her second hit of the game. Whittier scored on a wild pitch, and Hutchison scored on a Upchurch double to right field making the score 8-1.

 

The final run of the game came from a Blosser single, advancing on an error before advancing on a sacrifice fly and scoring on a Whittier single.

 

Senior pitcher Ashley Frizzell (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) improved her record to 4-5 on five strikeouts and five assists.

 

Mercer was led by Madruga and Ashley Anderson with two hits each on three at bats.

 

The Lady Mocs face No. 24 North Carolina State and Michigan State on Friday. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
