Wells makes history in winning title; Terriers capture team crown
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Wofford sophomore Erin Wells made program history by winning the individual title, while the Terriers distanced themselves from the field on day two to capture the team crown at the Diet Coke Wofford Intercollegiate at The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
Wells, who was tied for first after Monday's opening round, shot the tournament's only under par round Tuesday to garner the first individual title by a Terrier women's player in program history. Her 74-71--145 (+1) was three shots better than second-place Claudine Foong of Gardner-Webb, who carded a 74-74--148 (+4). The pair had entered Tuesday's final 18 holes with a one shot advantage over the next set of players. Wells now has registered three-straight top-10 results and four overall during the 2006-07 campaign.
Wofford remained consistent as a team with a 308-308--616 (+40) to pull ahead in the team standings by 12 strokes over second-place Gardner-Webb. The Bulldogs posted a 313-315--628 (+52).
The Terriers' team crown is the third in program history, which started in 1996, and third since Wofford hired Angie Ridgeway as head coach prior to 2004-05 campaign. Senior Laura Parris is the only Terrier player to be a part of all three team tournament championships.
Parris charged into the top 10 individuals by lowering her score by five strokes on the second day and finishing in sixth place with an 80-75--155 (+11), just four shots out of third place.
Sophomore Colleen Rice also was among the top-10 players with an eighth-place tying 79-80--159 (+15), equaling the effort by two other players in the field.
Freshman Sarah Herbert, who was tied for third after the first 18 holes, dropped back into an 11th-place tying result with a 75-85--160 (+16). Her classmate, Ellen Kvarby, concluded the Wofford contingent with an 83-82--165 (+21) to tie for 21st.
Rounding out the Terriers was rookie Shelly McLaughlin. She played as an individual and finished 32nd after a 47-over par 99-92--191.
Gardner-Webb was the only other school to place three players in the top 10 but Jacksonville and High Point tallied two apiece.
Wofford will continue its spring season March 12-13 at the North/South Intercollegiate in Jacksonville Beach, Fla.

The Citadel Ends Up Seventh at Diet Coke Wofford Intercollegiate
Spartanburg, S.C. ? The Citadel golf team placed seventh at the Diet Coke Wofford Intercollegiate played at the par-72, 5,847-yard Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C. on Monday and Tuesday. The Bulldogs improved their score by 10 strokes in the second round as they ended up with a total of 868 (439-429).
After sophomore Brittany Nagel paced the Cadets in the first round, it was sophomore captain Kasey Owens who led The Citadel on the second day as she improved on her first-day score by 18 strokes with a 92 to finish with a total of 202 (110-92). Nagel fired a 101 on the second day and had the best total score for The Citadel with a 194 (93-101), while junior Maggie Dunning improved her first-round score by two strokes. Sophomore Elizabeth Penn-Sanders also played in the event for the Bulldogs.
Host and fellow Southern Conference member Wofford won the tournament with a mark of 616 (308-308), 12 strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb (313-315). Jacksonville placed third with a 638 (319-319), two shots ahead of High Point (319-321). Old Dominion was fifth after firing a 648 (324-324) while Kennesaw State finished sixth with a score of 683 (355-328).
Erin Wells of Wofford took individual honors as she finished on top with a 145 (74-71). Claudine Foong of Gardner-Webb was second with a 148 (74-74) and Camilla Loeveid of Gardner-Webb ended up third after firing a 152 (76-76).

UNCG Finishes Seventh at Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, NC ? Ashley Mylton fired a 77 to finish 12th in the individual standings and help UNC Greensboro to a seventh place finish in the team standings at the Pinehurst Challenge played on Pinehurst No. 8.
Mylton, a junior from Charlotte, NC, shot a 77 for the second straight day to finish five shots off of the pace and finish in a tie for 12th. Teammate Ashley Parrott, a sophomore from Johnson City, TN, shot a 79 to finish in a tie for 19th place. For Mylton, it was her fourth Top 20 finish of the season and the 12th of her career. For Parrott, it was her second career Top 20 finish and the first of the season.
East Carolina’s Lene Krog and Arkansas-Little Rock’s Sara Wikstrom tied for the individual title, both shooting 74 on the final day. East Carolina won the team title on a fifth player scorecard tiebreaker. Both the Pirates and North Carolina State shot 613 to tie atop the team leaderboard. UNCG was 18 shots behind, tied for seventh with UNC Wilmington.
The tournament was shortened to just 36 holes after a long frost delay on Monday morning.
The Spartans return to action this weekend when they head to Gainesville, FL to play in the Lady Gator Invitiational.

Malin Fryk Finishes Second, WCU Women's Golf Tied for 12th at Lady Jaguar Invitational
Mobile, Ala. - Western Carolina junior Malin Fryk carded a final round of one-under (71) to finish in second place at the Lady Jaguar Invitational, hosted by Univ. of South Alabama at the 5,821-yard Azalea City Golf Course. Despite Fryk's third top-three finish of the season, the Catamounts placed in a three-way tie for 12th overall after shooting 623 as a team.
Led by individual medalist Taryn Durham, who shot two-under 142 - including a tournament-low 68 on Tuesday - Middle Tennessee State captured the team title with a 36-hole score of 591. The Blue Raiders were 14 strokes ahead of second-place Jacksonville State (605), with Lamar and Winthrop tying for third (606) and Belmont rounding out the top five three strokes in arrears at 609.
A native of Trollhattan, Sweden, Fryk's one-under 71 in the second round tied for the second-lowest score of the day and moved her from fourth to second in the final rankings. Senior Bianca Melone and freshman Elin Mickelsson both slipped into a tie for 63rd at 159, with junior Kandy Carland shooting 161 for 76th-place. Rounding out WCU's players in the event was freshman Tiffany Schisler who finished 103rd with a two-day total of 161 in her first collegiate event.
Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks as it visits the Shamrock Intercollegiate, hosted by Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C., on March 16-18.
