SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced today that Elon’s Damon Gooch has been named the Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for March 7.

A sophomore from Gauteng, South Africa, Gooch started the 2007 season with seven wins in eight matches. His only loss was to then-ranked #26 Wake Forest’s Cory Parr. Gooch picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over 37th ranked South Carolina’s #1 singles player Pedro Rodrigues to lead the Phoenix to a 4-1 win over the Gamecocks. He also defeated 39th ranked Roy Sichel from Charlotte in straight sets. Also included in his wins was a 7-5, 6-3 victory of Wofford’s Andrew Stubbs at the #1 position. All of his wins this season have been in straight sets.

Other top performers from last week include College of Charleston’s Or Deckel, Chattanooga’s Mark Fynn, The Citadel’s Daniel Dossetor, Furman’s Andy Juc, Georgia Southern’s Greg Bekkers, and UNC Greensboro’s Andrey Bubnov.
