DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson improved to 12-0 at home and won its seventh straight with a 5-2 victory over cross-county rival Charlotte in women?s tennis action Tuesday afternoon at Covington Tennis Courts. The triumph improves the 67th-ranked Wildcats to 14-4 overall, while the 49ers fall to 7-6 on the 2007 spring campaign.
The Wildcats continued their impressive play in doubles competition by grabbing two of the three affairs. Virginia Berry and Teresa Wang put their club just one win away from an early team advantage with an 8-0 blanking of the 49ers? Michelle Alexander and Koren Fleming. Davidson?s duo of Lora Dushanova and Michele Fanney tallied the difference maker in partner?s play, 8-4.
After dropping the top-two singles spots, Davidson claimed the final four seeds to clinch the dual. Berry, a freshman from Spartanburg, S.C., won her eighth straight with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Charlotte?s Ali Piacante to improve her team-best record to 13-2. Fellow first-year Wildcat Teresa Wang followed with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Fleming, while Kim Whelan (6-2, 6-3) and Dushanova (6-4, 6-3) also took their matches.
Ana Spivakovsky and Kathy Robey were the only individuals to record victories for the 49ers in singles play.
Davidson will continue its longest homestand of the season with an 11 a.m.
contest Saturday against SoCon foe Appalachian State. The 49ers also return to action March 31 as they entertain East Carolina at 10 a.m.
