Charlotte 5, The Citadel 2

Charlotte, N.C. ? For the first time in over six weeks, The Citadel was able to win the doubles point but the early 1-0 lead was not enough to propel the Bulldogs Saturday, falling 5-2 at the D.L. Phillips Tennis Complex in Charlotte. The 49ers avenged last season’s 6-1 loss to The Citadel, their first loss to the Bulldogs in the series history.

52nd-ranked Daniel Dossetor and James Eason finally found the elusive 20th victory of the season as they topped Ryan Johnson and Felix Bernhoerster at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, Frederic Petrilli and Martin King recorded their first win of the season as they edged Brad Clinard and Aljoscha Jelinek, 8-6, to give The Citadel its first doubles point victory since Feb. 10.

Ricky Cuellar tied the match for Charlotte at 1-1 as he notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Petrilli at No. 6 singles. The 49ers pulled ahead as Jelinek defeated King at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0. The Bulldogs dropped to a 3-1 deficit in the match as Derek Jose fell at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-0.

Dossetor fell to 2-3 against ranked opponents this season as he dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to No. 80 Roy Sichel at No. 1 singles as Sichel clinched the match victory for Charlotte. At No. 3 singles, Johnson won a 7-6, 6-4 match over The Citadel’s Alberto Diaz.

The Citadel’s second point on the day came at the end as James Eason recorded a 6-3, 7-5 win over Darren Mansell at No. 2 singles.

Appalachian State 4, Chattanooga 3

March 24, 2007 - BOONE--Appalachian State improved to 3-1 in conference play Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over SoCon rival Chattanooga.

David Doverspike (Deluth, Gla./Northview) clinched the victory for Appalachian (8-5, 3-1) on court No. 6 by battling back from down a set to defeat Pavel Yostrikov 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. The freshman improved to 7-6 in singles play and ruined Yostrikov's perfect record at No. 6 (7-1).

Appalachian got out to a quick start, blitzing Chattanooga (12-4, 3-2) in doubles play and winning on all three courts.

In singles play, freshman Peter Jacobs (Pretoria, South Africa) continued to play above the No. 4 level on that court, posting his eleventh win in twelve matches this season with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Razvan Axente (9-5).

Senior Dimitar Dimitrov (Sofia, Bulgaria) won his fourth straight at No. 3, putting the finishing touches on a perfect week in singles. Dimitrov (9-3) has not lost a singles match since March 15 at College of Charleston, a span that includes four wins. Dimitrov's opponent, Peter Sauska, suffered just his third loss (13-2).

Doverspike's win made moot what seemingly would be the match of the day at No. 2, where UTC captain Mark Fynn defeated Ryan Brookshaw (Pretoria, South Africa) in three sets to conclude the match.
