Wofford 4, Western Carolina 3
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Adriane Hodges clinched a 4-3 victory for the Wofford women’s tennis team over Southern Conference foe Western Carolina Thursday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.
Hodges defeated Western Carolina’s Tessie Salame 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot to earn her fifth singles win of the season. The win came as Wofford led 3-2 with two matches left to play. Wofford needed to win one of the final two, and the veteran Hodges pulled through with the victory.
Wofford led off with a doubles win at the No. 2 spot, as Hodges and Cayley Wetzig blew out the Catamount pairing of Suzanna Sjokvist and Mariona Jane 8-2. After dropping the first two games to fall behind 2-0, Hodges and Wetzig rallied to win the next eight to complete their fourth doubles win of the season. The Terrier twosome has not lost a doubles match this season and boasts a 4-0 record.
Western Carolina would take the doubles point, however, after a win at No. 1 and a forfeit at No. 3.
Following the doubles matches, Wofford fell behind 2-0 after a forfeit at the No. 6 singles position. The deficit did not phase the Terriers, however, as team ace Merry Ellen Henry notched Wofford’s first point with a 6-0, 6-2 singles win over Trish Hanson at the No. 1 spot. With the victory, Henry improved her conference record to 3-2 and her overall record to 7-4.
Sabrina Smyers followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Mariona Jane to even the score at 2-2. Wofford took the lead minutes later as Wetzig, Wofford’s sophomore No. 3 player, triumphed over Suzanna Sjokvist for a 6-4, 6-2 win.
With a 3-2 lead and two matches still in progress, Hodges and Carson battled their Catamount counterparts in deciding sets. Hodges’ experience was the difference for Wofford, however, as the junior rebounded from a second-set loss to clinch the final set and the win for Wofford.
“Today’s match was a hard fought and very tough win for us,” head coach Rod Ray said. “The match was very close and I was impressed with Western Carolina.
“After a tough match yesterday, I am not sure we were totally mentally ready at the beginning of the match. When a team’s not totally ready, it’s the coaches’ fault and I take ownership in us having a slow start in the doubles. The team did a great job in the singles, however, and I am proud of both their effort and performance today.”
The Wofford women’s team improves to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Terriers will continue home court action this weekend as Wofford welcomes Chattanooga for a Southern Conference contest on Sunday, March 25 at noon.
