SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford women's tennis team continued Southern Conference play Wednesday afternoon and fell, 7-0, against league co-leader Furman at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C. The match was the third of a five-contest homestand for the Terriers, which includes four straight tilts against SoCon opponents.

Wofford (3-7, 1-3 SoCon) split the two doubles matches which were contested. At the No. 2 slot, Terriers' Adriane Hodges and Cayley Wetzig garnered an 8-3 triumph over the Lady Paladins' Jacqueline Eckert and Lauren Tomory.

Freshman Sabrina Smyers played arguably the toughest singles match, when she faced Furman's (6-8, 3-0 SoCon) No. 5 player Natasa Manojlovic. Smyers battled through both sets before losing 6-4, 6-2.

Wetzig also had a strong showing, at No. 3, in her 6-2, 6-3 loss to Eckert. Wetzig and Eckert went back-and-forth through numerous deuce points. The point, which was won by Eckert, proved to be match point.

"Furman did a great job today," said Wofford head coach Rod Ray. "They have a good team and they played hard. Although we are obviously disappointed with today’s score, we continue to improve in many specific areas. We tried hard today, but we need to improve before we are ready to beat this team. Overall, I am proud of our team. Their attitude is very good and they are growing individually and as a team. Right now, we need to start mentally preparing for tomorrow’s match."

The Terriers continue their current league slate with a 3 p.m. Thursday meeting at the Reeves Tennis Center against Western Carolina.

Gardner-Webb 4, Appalachian State 3

March 21, 2007 - BOONE--The afternoon started warm but got colder for the Appalachian State women's tennis team, both literally and figuratively, as the Mountaineers dropped a hard-fought 4-3 match at home to Gardner-Webb.

The Mountaineers got out to a quick 2-0 lead but couldn't clinch the final point in singles competiton as ASU fell to 7-6. In the decisive match, at No. 4, GWU's Monica Walsner defeated Amanda Cash in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Monica Tomas earned a comeback win at No. 2 to get the Mountaineers their first singles win after Appalachian won two of three to get the doubles point. Caroline Mauch got ASU within one match of the victory at No. 6, but Anja Gugger and Cash were thwarted in their attempts to clinch.
