Southern Conference Announces Wrestling All-Conference, Wrestler of the Year

 

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Southern Conference wrestling coaches have selected the all-conference team for the 2007 season as well as the Wrestler of the Year. The coaches’ selections are based on nominations from their teams.  Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own wrestlers.

 

Chattanooga landed eight wrestlers on the all-conference team, including Wrestler of the Year Matt Keller.  The senior went 14-0 in dual meets this season and posted a 4-0 record in league action.  Keller finished the regular season with an overall record of 26-2 and is currently ranked No. 7 in the InterMat wrestling polls.  Wrestling at 133 pounds for the Mocs, he is a three-time NCAA Tournament qualifier and holds the SoCon title in the 133 pound weight class. 

 

Seven other Mocs join Keller on the all-conference team after leading Chattanooga to a school-best No. 13 ranking in the InterMat polls and finishing with a 16-1 dual meet record this season.  Javier Maldonado earned his second all-conference selection at 125 pounds along with Michael Keefe at 141 pounds and Jake Yost at 157 pounds.  Aaron Martin earned his first all-league honor at 149 pounds while teammates T.J.Sayers (165 lbs.), Josh Edmondson (184 lbs.) and Matt Koz (HWT) round out the Mocs that landed on the  list.

 

UNC Greensboro’s Joe Lowe finished the regular season with a 14-0 record in dual meets, including 5-0 in league action along with recording three pins to land on the team for the second straight year.  Lowe is a two-time SoCon champion in the 174 pound weight class.

 

Corry Murray from VMI posted a 4-1 record in dual meets and recorded three pins to earn his first all-league honor at 197 pounds.

 

All six SoCon schools head to Raleigh, N.C. this weekend to compete in Mat Jam 2007.  Chattanooga currently leads the team rankings with a 5-0 record in SoCon dual meets with UNC Greensboro in second and VMI in third.  Appalachian State is in fourth place with The Citadel in fifth and Davidson finishing in sixth.  The SoCon championships will be held on the campus of North Carolina State University on Saturday, March 3.  Competition is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
