Bulldog Track and Field Wins Six Events at SSU Eye Opener, Finishes 1-2 in Four Events

Savannah, Ga. ? The Citadel track and field team opened the 2007 outdoor season in stellar fashion Saturday, winning six events at the Savannah State Eye Opener Meet in Savannah. The Bulldogs had 41 top-eight finishes in the meet while the Bulldogs finished 1-2 in four separate events.

Natalie Wolin continued to impress in her freshman year, winning the 5,000m run and recording the second-fastest time in school history with a mark of 18:49.51. The Bulldogs continued to dominate the 5k as sophomore Erin Ritter placed second (19:20.41), Amanda Rawl finished fourth (20:07.49) and Veronica Barredo placed seventh (22:22.99).

Redshirt senior Alexis Moore continued to shine as her 12.48 time in the 100m dash placed her fourth and put her with the third-fastest time in the school’s record books while her 200m time of 25.32 is a new personal record and the second-fastest time in school history.

The junior tandem of Allison Taylor and Laura Phelan finished 1-2 in the javelin as Taylor set a new personal record with a throw of 122’ 2”. Phelan placed right behind her with a mark of 115’ 7”.

The Bulldog women continued to dominate the throwing events as senior Stephanie McNeill and sophomore Monique Edwards finished 1-2 in the discus. McNeill, who won the Southern Conference discus championship last year, recorded a mark of 126’ 2” to win while Edwards’ mark of 119’ 5” placed her second.

Junior Tasha Sanders set two new personal records throughout the meet. Sanders’ 15’ 3.5” mark in the long jump is a top mark that put her fifth in the school’s books while her third-place mark of 39’ 3” in the shot put is the second-best throw in school history.

Redshirt sophomore Jamel Brown, who repeatedly broke the school record in the hurdles during indoor season, got the outdoor season off to a great start with a fourth-place finish in the 110m hurdles, running 15.31.

The men’s 3,000m steeplechase was another Citadel-dominated event as senior Will Wilson and freshman Brendan Kight recorded the fourth 1-2 finish of the meet for The Citadel. Wilson won the event with a time of 10:00.31 while Kight ran 10:11.45 to place second.

Freshman Kenny Stephens was the shot put runner-up with a throw of 45’ 7.25” while senior Alex Croskey placed fourth with a mark of 42’ 6”. Croskey then set a personal record in the discus, throwing 136’ 6” to finish second.

Rounding out the men’s events, Matt Earls made his first appearance of his career and finished second in the javelin with a mark of 143’ 9”.
