Carland Places Fourth at Shamrock Invitational; Catamounts end up eighth
TEGA CAY, SC- Western Carolina women’s golfer Kandy Carland placed fourth at the Shamrock Invitational and the Catamount team ended the tournament in eighth place at the Tega Cay Golf Club.
Carland shot a 79 in the second day and ended the tournament with a 36-hole final total of 156. As a team, the Catamounts shot 687 and was three strokes behind High Point University. Winthrop won the tournament shooting 642.

Furman Finishes Tournament in 17th Place
Baton Rouge, La. ? Sophomore Blair Lamb shot a team-best 74 on the final round at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic as the Furman women’s golf team (318-308-309=935) finished in 17th place overall. Second-ranked Duke(298-288-286=872) won the tournament for the second straight year, holding a six-stroke advantage over Vanderbilt.
Lamb had Furman’s best round for the second consecutive day, carding a three-round 224 (77-73-74) to finish in a tie for 21st overall. Theresa Paik ended competition in a tie for 54th after struggling with an 81 on the final 18 holes. Corrine Carr shot a 75 and Ashley Baker carded a 79 on Sunday.
Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst won the individual crown by eight strokes.
Blumenherst posted a three-round 207 (68-69-70) to hold a large lead over Auburn’s Nicole Hage (72-72-71=215), Tennessee’s Marci Turner
(73-71-71=215) and Mississippi State’s Amanda Mathis (71-69-75=215) who finished in a tie for second place.
The 21-team field featured 16 teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 50, with four ranked in the top 10.
The Lady Paladins will compete at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga., beginning next Friday, March 23.

The Citadel Places 16th at Shamrock Challenge
Rock Hill, S.C. ? The Citadel golf team finished 16th at the two-day, 36-hole Shamrock Challenge played at the par-72, 5,907-yard Tega Cay Golf Club in Rock Hill, S.C. Host Winthrop won the fifth annual tournament after firing a 642 (330-312).
The Bulldogs improved on their first-round score by four strokes on Sunday and ended up with a mark of 854 (429-425). Sophomore Brittany Nagel led the Cadets in the second round as she shot a 95 to finish with a score of 195 (100-95). Sophomore captain Kasey Owens had the best total score for the Bulldogs with a 188 (91-97). Junior Maggie Dunning and sophomore Elizabeth Penn-Sanders also competed for The Citadel.
The host Eagles came from seven strokes behind and improved on their first-round score by 18 shots to win the tournament. East Tennessee State finished two strokes behind Winthrop while defending champion and the leader heading into Sunday’s action, Elon, placed third with a 659. Charleston Southern ended up fourth after firing a 661, while Gardner-Webb placed fifth with a 668. Bucknell, High Point, Western Carolina, Minnesota State, and Texas-Pan American rounded out the top 10. Jackson State, Longwood, St. Francis (Pa.), Belmont Abbey College, and IUPUI finished in the 11th through 15th spots respectively.
Jutta Degerman of Winthrop won the individual championship with a 152 (79-73), three strokes on top of Lucy Gould of East Tennessee State and Katrin Rumpf of Charleston Southern. Kandy Carland of Western Carolina shot a 156 (77-79) to place fourth and Sara Hester of Winthrop rounded out the top five with a 159 (76-83).
The Bulldogs will hit the links again on Apr. 15-17 as they host the Southern Conference Championships. It will mark the first time that the SoCon Championships will be held in the Lowcountry since 2002 when they took place in North Charleston. ASU Places 3rd at NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate
TAMPA, Fla. -- Paced by a final-round 74 from sophomore Mary Kate Bowman, Appalachian State University women’s golf placed third among eight teams at the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate, played Thursday and Friday at Pebblecreek G.C.
Bowman’s two-over-par 74 tied for the second-lowest score of the final day and, combined with an opening-round 84, left her in a tie for seventh place overall in the 45-player field. Each of the Mountaineers’ five individuals finished among the top 26 on the final leader board.
As a team, Appalachian carded a two-round total of 641 (328-313), just 12 strokes behind tournament champion Stetson (320-309-629). Host Northern Illinois finished second at 633 (326-307).
The Apps return to action next Saturday and Sunday at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. (Ford’s Colony C.C.)

Cougars Finish Tied for 13th at LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic
The College of Charleston women’s golf team shot a 306 to total a 923 and finish tied for 13th after the third and final round of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic held this weekend at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La. The Cougars tied for 13th out of 21 teams, 16 of which are in the top 50 in the nation. #1-ranked Duke won the tournament with a three-day total of 872. #7 Vanderbilt placed second with an 878 and in third was #6 Auburn with an 879. Charleston is currently ranked 48th in the nation.
Blue Devil Amanda Blumenherst, ranked #1 in the nation, won individual medalist honors with a 207.
Steff Kirchmayr led the Cougars, finishing tied for 28th with a 225. Megan Miller tied for 49th with her 231 and tied for 59th was Fiona Puyo with her 234. Tied for 73rd was Dinah Plyler with a 237 and tied for 93rd was Emily Rapp with a 245.
The Cougars travel to Tucson, Ariz., March 24th for the Mountain View Classic.
