College of Charleston 5, Appalachian State 2

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. ? The College of Charleston men’s tennis team stayed undefeated on the season with an impressive 5-2 victory over Appalachian State on Mar. 15 at the Patriots Point Tennis Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

 

The victory improves CofC to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the SoCon, while the loss drops Appalachian State to 5-4 and 0-1 in the SoCon.

 

The Cougars won all three of the doubles matches to earn one team point.  The doubles team of Jimmy Petit and Justin Malina improved to 5-0 for the season with an 8-0 win over David Doverspike and Lee Floyd of Appalachian State.

 

CofC then won four out of the six singles matches for the victory.  #112 Or Dekel, won his eighth singles match of the season by defeating Trent Constantine of App. State, 6-4, 6-0.  Omer Abramovich of CofC stayed undefeated for the season and improved his singles record to 8-0 with a win over Lee Floyd, 6-0, 6-4.  Marcos Digliodo and Malina won the other singles matches for the Cougars.

 

CofC will return to action on Mar. 17 against #43 Elon (12-2, 3-0 SoCon) in Elon, N.C. beginning at 1 p.m.  Appalachian State will return to the court on Mar. 16 against The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. beginning at 1 p.m.

Charlotte 4, Davidson 3

Davidson, NC - The Charlotte 49ers (11-6) behind four singles victories defeated cross-county rival Davidson, 4-3, on the road. Charlotte's victory was their first over Davidson since a 4-3 win at home, April 8, 2004.

 

Davidson won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte's Ryan Johnson and Felix Bernhoerster lost to Davidson's Flaviu Simihaian and John Bolton, 8-6. At number two doubles, Charlotte's Roy Sichel and Darren Mansell lost to Davidson's Sam Burns and Ethan Jaffee, 8-6. At number three doubles, Charlotte's Dorian Host and Aljoscha Jelinek defeated Davidson's Phillip Compeau and Eric Noble, 8-6.

 

The 49ers won four of the six singles matches to claim the victory. At number one singles, Charlotte's Sichel, who is ranked #78 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated Davidson's Simihaian, 6-2, 7-6. At number two singles, Charlotte's Mansell defeated Davidson's Bolton, 6-4, 7-5. At number three singles, Charlotte's Johnson lost to Davidson's Scott Myers, 6-3, 6-3. At number four singles, Charlotte's Jelinek defeated Davidson's Jaffee, 6-4, 6-1. At number five singles, Charlotte's Host defeated Davidson's Burns, 6-3, 7-5. At number six singles, Charlotte's Brad Clinard lost to Davidson's Noble in three hard fought sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

The 49ers return to action at home against UNC Wilmington, Saturday, March 17 at 10 am.

 

 

 

Indiana 6, Wofford 1

CLEMSON, S.C. ? George Kernodle earned a straight-set win at the No. 2 spot, but Indiana stormed to a 6-1 victory over the Wofford men’s tennis team Thursday afternoon.

 

Kernodle, one of two freshmen in Wofford’s starting lineup, defeated Indiana No. 2 player David Bubenicek 6-4, 7-5 for his second victory of the season. Kernodle has taken both victories in straight sets.

 

“Kernodle had a great win and it showed that he’s made a lot of progress,” head coach Rod Ray said. “He’s been working hard and it has paid off. He had to improve to beat that guy.”

 

Terrier ace Andrew Stubbs nearly pulled out a victory over Thomas Richter at the No. 1 spot, but the Indiana star held on for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win. Richter recently earned a straight-set win over #27 Marek Sramek of South Alabama, but had trouble with Wofford’s top player.

 

“Even though we lost, we got a lot better today,” Ray said. “We still have some things that we need to work on, but I feel that we’ve all made a lot of progress in certain areas.”

 

Wofford (5-4) will return to its home court Friday afternoon for a 1 p.m. match against the Liberty Flames. The match will be the first of a five-game homestand for the Terriers, who will follow with three straight conference matches at Reeves Tennis Center beginning on March 24 against UNC Greensboro.

Indiana 6, Furman 1

Clemson, S.C. ? The Furman men’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers at the Hoke A. Tennis Center on the campus of Clemson University on Thursday afternoon. The Paladins dropped to 6-9 on the year while Indiana improved to 9-6 overall.

 

Furman’s lineup was changed, most significantly at doubles, due to injury.

The Paladins dropped all three doubles matches, and found themselves in a one-point hole to start singles play.

 

The Paladins could never get going in singles play, dropping matches in flights one through five in straight sets. Freshman Jordan Walters managed the only Furman victory of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-2 win over sophomore Peter Antons.

 

Furman will try to get back on the winning track as it returns to Southern Conference play. The Paladins will host the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m.

Illinois State 5, The Citadel 2

Charleston, S.C. ? Tough wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles were not enough Wednesday as The Citadel tennis team fell to Illinois State, 5-2, at the Earle Tennis Center on The Citadel campus. Daniel Dossetor and James Eason each recorded singles victories on the day for the Bulldogs.

 

The Citadel (2-8, 0-1 Southern) dropped the doubles point despite the 52nd-ranked tandem of Daniel Dossetor and James Eason winning their seventh consecutive match. Derek Jose and Frederic Petrilli dropped the No. 2 doubles match, 8-1, to start things off. The No. 3 doubles pair of Alberto Diaz and Martin King took a 3-0 lead before the Redbird team of Oscar Beich and Michael Hobson charged back with the 9-7 victory to clinch the doubles point for Illinois State. Dossetor and Eason closed out their match with a 7-3 tiebreaker in the final frame to win, 8-7 (7-3). The Bulldogs are 0-8 this season when losing the doubles point.

 

The Redbirds (7-5, 0-0 Missouri Valley) quickly took a 2-0 lead after ISU’s Xavier Riart-Ferrer cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Petrilli at No. 5 singles. Illinois State extended that lead after Oscar Beich took a 6-2, 6-1 win over a struggling Martin King at No. 4 singles. King has lost his last four matches. The clinching fourth point for Illinois State came at No. 3 singles as Luka Marinkovic beat Diaz, 6-3, 6-3.

 

The Bulldogs got on the board as Daniel Dossetor, nationally ranked No. 118, won at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-3 for his eighth straight victory. The Redbirds added one final point to the board as ISU’s Daniel Tobar topped Jose, 6-2, 6-4.

 

Closing out the day at No. 2 singles, James Eason easily took the first set, 6-0 and led the second set, 3-0, before Alfredo Lagarda mounted a comeback to take a 6-5 lead in the second set. Eason countered that momentum shift and tied the set at six games apiece, forcing a tiebreaker. Eason rode that late momentum to a 7-4 tiebreaker victory for his sixth dual match singles victory and 13th singles victory overall on the season.

 

“I’ve never seen a momentum shift like that,” said Eason. “I was going pretty good when he just came out of nowhere and put it on me. Luckily, I was able to come back at the end and get the win.”

 

Illinois State returns to action tomorrow as they face the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, March 16 as they host the Mountaineers of Appalachian State in a Southern Conference match.
