CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team won four singles matches and the doubles point Saturday to notch a 5-2 victory over Mercer in a non-conference match.
UTC took a 1-0 lead after doubles victories at positions No. 1 and 2. The top team of Lindsey Ballard and Anastasia Zhukova took its match, 8-2, and the duo of Bonnie Adams and Beata Knizat won at No. 2, 8-4.
In singles play, the Lady Mocs claimed wins in the first four positions. Zhukova, ranked 51st nationally, improved her record to 10-1 at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Lauriana Auvergne.
Ballard registered a 6-4, 6-2 win over Anna Wieslander at No. 2, Knizat was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Irys Citko at No. 3 and Adams defeated Priscilla Dias, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(4) at No. 4.
Mercer’s lone points came at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Rachel Kerley beat Samantha Duggan, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, and Karen Bellman defeated Kate Ksiezopolski 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
UTC, now 4-8 overall, host UNC Greensboro Sunday at 10 a.m. at the UTC Tennis Complex in a key Southern Conference match.

STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team won their second Southern Conference match of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Wofford 4-3 at the Hanner Fieldhouse Courts.
In singles action, Heather Reynolds and Jessica Fuller picked up wins. Reynolds won her No. 3 match 7-5, 6-4 over Cayley Wetzig and Fuller defeated Sabrina Smyers 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4. Shea Huxtable won the No. 6 slot by default. Molly Maddox fell 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 to Merry Ellen Henry at No. 1 and Kristi Kegerreis dropper her No. 2 match 6-2, 6-3 to Adriane Hodges. At No. 5, Emma Knight fell 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-4 to McKenzie Carson.
The Eagles swept the doubles point. At No. 1, Christine Caforio/Maddox won 9-7 over Henry/Hodges. Reynolds/Kegerreis defeated Carson/Wetzig 8-5 at No. 2 and Fuller/Jessica Matlosz won the No. 3 match by default.

Greenville, S.C. ? The Furman women’s tennis team opened the Southern Conference season with a 7-0 win over the visiting Elon Phoenix on Saturday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. The Lady Paladins (3-7) have won 71 consecutive league matches and have not lost a conference opener since the 1996-97 season. Elon (6-6) has never beaten the Lady Paladins.
Furman only gave up three total points in the doubles matches, quickly taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic improved to 7-3 this spring with an 8-1 victory over Deanna Bailey and Jenn Tucci at flight one. Lisa Bornt-Davis and Lauren Tomory shutout Elon’s Kelley Moore and Francie Rudolph at position three.
The Lady Paladins swept the singles matches in straight sets to earn their fifth consecutive shutout win over the Phoenix. At number five, Tomory earned her fourth straight win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Butcher.
Gioia, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, topped Bailey, 6-1, 6-0, to improve to 9-1 this spring.
Furman will host Winthrop in a non-conference tilt on Thursday, March 15 at 2:30 p.m.

CHATTANOOGA, TN ? The lower portion on UNC Greensboro’s line-up won four singles matches to lead the Spartans to a 5-2 win over Chattanooga in Southern Conference women’s tennis action Sunday afternoon.
UNCG got a thrilling three-set win by Whitney Miles to go along with straight set wins by Courtney Akel and Valerie Behr. In addition, Jess Eblen won by injury default as the Spartans (5-3, 1-0) won their SoCon season opener.
Miles, a junior from Atlanta, GA, lost the opening set 6-3 before rallying to win the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-2, over Beata Knizat. The win raised her record to 5-3 on the spring and 8-10 overall for the year.
Akel held off a late charge by Bonnie Adams to win at No. 4 singles, 6-1 and 7-6, while Behr handled Samantha Duggan, 6-2 and 6-4. In addition, the Spartans won two of three doubles pro-sets to claim the doubles point.
UNCG hosts Portland on Tuesday at 2:30.

ELON, N.C. ? Deanna Bailey bested Christina Feyen 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, propelling Elon to a 4-3 non-conference women’s tennis triumph over Portland Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
After the Phoenix (7-6) secured the doubles point, Paige Kensrue conquered Jenna Tanzer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to extend the Elon edge to 2-0. Following Phoenix captain Jenn Tucci’s 6-4, 6-1 victory over Megan Sporndli at No. 2, Bailey beat Feyen to put Elon ahead 4-0 and ice the win for the Phoenix.
In doubles action, Bailey and Tucci topped Sporndli and Tanzer 8-4 at No. 1 Kensrue and Butcher slipped past Lindsey Griffin and Audree Jenks 8-6 at No. 2 to clinch the match’s first point for Elon.
The Pilots (7-4) picked up wins at No. 3 doubles (Feyen and Katie Kennel over Kelley Moore and Hayley Wahl 8-3), No. 4 singles (Griffin over Butcher 6-2, 6-4), No 5 singles (Anna Gullickson over Francie Rudolph 3-6, 6-4, 10-4) and No. 6 singles (Jenks over Alli Benton 6-4, 6-3).
The Phoenix will return to Southern Conference play, visiting Davidson at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Meanwhile, Portland will continue its tour of the SoCon this week with an 11:30 a.m. appearance at UNC Greensboro on Tuesday and a noon visit at Davidson on Wednesday.

The Eagles swept all three doubles matches. Molly Maddox/Christine Caforio won 8-3 over Anja Gugger/Monica Thomas at No. 1. At No. 2, Heather Reynolds/Kristi Kegerreis defeated Amanda Cash/Frances Blanton 8-2. Jessica Matlosz/Jessica Fuller wrapped up the doubles point for GSU, beating Lauren Holton/Mallory Cook 8-3 at the No. 3 spot.

Savannah, Ga. ? The Western Carolina women’s tennis team split two road matches over spring break this week, falling to the Evansville Purple Aces, 5-2, in Hilton Head, S.C., before downing Savannah State in straight sets, 7-0.
The Catamounts (4-4) did not lose a single game in both singles and doubles competition against Savannah State, sweeping the first through fifth singles seeds with perfect 6-0 scores and downing the Bulldogs doubles squads 8-0. WCU won at No. 6 by default.
Against Evansville, freshmen Tessie Salame and Amanda Massey were the lone Catamounts to score, winning at No. 2 and No. 4 seeds in singles competition. Salame defeated the Purple Aces’ Beth Peyton, 7-5, 6-2, while Massey captured back-to-back sets of 6-3 over Allie Cox.
Western returns to action next Thursday, March 15, as it visits mountain-rival, UNC Asheville, at 2:00 pm. The match is a part of the Parkway Series, presented by Arby’s, in which Western currently leads 5-2 after the fall seasons. The Catamounts downed the Bulldogs by a 5-2 count a year ago in Cullowhee.
