Furman 4, Georgia Tech 3
Atlanta, Ga. ? The Furman men’s tennis team won another 4-3 match in thrilling fashion, defeating No. 45 Georgia Tech with a three-set victory by sophomore Andy Juc at the top singles position. Furman (6-7) posted its second win of the season over a top 50 opponent, and its first over the Yellow Jackets since 1993. Georgia Tech, who was coming off back-to-back wins over No. 10 Florida State and No. 20 Clemson, fell to 5-6 on the season.
“Our guys just played very well,” said Furman head coach Paul Scarpa, “They continued to fight and I really couldn’t have asked any more of them. Georgia Tech is a very good team and the match could have gone either way.”
The Paladins earned the critical doubles point with 8-6 wins at number one and three. Juc and partner Scott Kahler won their sixth consecutive match, defeating Jordan DeLass and George Gvelesiani at flight three. At the top position, Bo Ladyman and Brian Crook improved to 6-4 this spring with their win over Eric Molnar and Luke Rassow-Kantor.
In singles action, Georgia Tech evened the score with Scott Blackmon’s 6-4, 6-1 over Jordan Walters at number six. Furman came right back as Ladyman posted an impressive 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 victory over DeLass at position two. Furman took a 3-1 advantage in the match with Chris Gilli’s 7-6, 7-5 win over Rassow-Kantor at number five. Yellow Jacket wins at flight three and four knotted the overall score at three and put the pressure on the number one dual match. After losing the opening set 6-4, Juc battled back for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Jose Muguruza to give the Paladins the win.
Furman will have its hands full on Sunday as it opens Southern Conference play against No. 51 Elon at Mickel Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Elon was the lone conference opponent to beat the Paladins last season.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford men’s tennis team swept six singles matches without surrendering a single set to earn a 6-1 victory over Davidson Sunday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.
All six Wofford singles players earned straight-set victories over their counterparts from Davidson after the Wildcats swept the opening doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Wofford rebounded from the early deficit and tied the match at 1-1 after senior Alex Fridzon earned the first singles win, a 7-5, 6-1 rout of Davidson’s Eric Noble at the No. 4 spot.
The Terriers took the lead shortly thereafter with wins at the No. 6 and No. 1 positions from Christopher Williams and Andrew Stubbs, respectively. Williams completed his fourth win of the season with a second-set shutout in a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Phillip Compeau. Stubbs followed with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Davidson ace Flaviu Simihaian, also the fourth singles victory for the two-time all-conference honoree.
Wofford locked the win with a victory at the No. 5 spot from junior Richard Cahi, who defeated Sam Burns 6-1, 6-4.
Freshman George Kernodle and sophomore Scott Collins followed with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to complete the singles sweep, both winning in dramatic fashion. At No. 3, Collins fell to 5-0 in the second set against Scott Myers, but rallied to win the next seven games to complete a 6-1, 7-5 victory. Kernodle battled Davidson’s John Bolton for two sets, but held on for a 7-5, 7-5 win at the No. 2 position.
The win was the first Southern Conference victory of the season for Wofford (5-3, 1-1), as the Terriers improve to 4-1 on their home court.
The men’s tennis team will travel to Clemson, S.C., on March 15 to participate in the...The Terriers will face the Indiana Hoosiers at 4 p.m.

STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team lost 5-2 to Stetson Sunday afternoon at the Hanner Fieldhouse Tennis Courts.
The Eagles dropped the doubles point, winning only the No. 3 match as Matthew Sands/Neil Shine won 8-4 over Peter Dzuba/Dana Stamp. Borja Malet/Philip Prins fell 8-2 to Marcus Echtler/Filip Kricka at No. 1 and Emmanuel Nkoueleue/Greg Bekkers lost 8-4 to Joey Jones/Serguei Boulanou at No. 2.
GSU picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles, but fell in all other singles matches. Nkoueleue defeated Kricka 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 and Malet won 6-4, 6-3 over Stamp at No. 5. Bekkers dropped his No. 1 match 6-0, 5-7, 1-0(6) to Iticham Laalej. Sands fell 6-1, 7-6(6) to Boulanou at No. 3 and Prins lost 6-2, 6-3 to Jones at No. 4. Shine fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Dzuba at No. 6.

Greenville, S.C. ? The Furman men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Elon Phoenix in the Southern Conference season-opener on Sunday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. Elon (11-2, 1-0) have beaten the Paladins (6-8, 0-1) in each of the last two meetings and shared the SoCon regular-season crown with Furman last year.
Furman won two of the three doubles matches to take the early advantage in the match. At flight three, Andy Juc and Scott Kahler posted an 8-2 win over Austin Fenn and Sebastian Bredberg. Juc and Kahler have won seven straight matches. Ryan Friend and Andy Sobczyk sealed the point with an
8-6 victory over Anuwat Dalodom and Gustaf Asplund at number two.
The Paladins managed only one singles victory, that coming from Juc the number one spot. Juc, who has won four of his last five matches, topped Damon Gooch, 6-3, 6-2. Elon won the final five singles matches in straight sets to take home the league win.
Furman will challenge Indiana University on Thursday, March 15 at 10 a.m.
The match will be played on the campus of Clemson University.

The Eagles captured the doubles point thanks to wins by the Nos. 2 and 3 pairs. Joris De Weerdt/Greg Bekkers defeated Gabriel Groh/Nicholas Hudson 9-7 at the No. 2 spot, while Matthew Sands/Neil Shine won 9-8(5) over Sun Kwon Baek/Marco Herrera at No. 3. Emmanuel Nkoueleue/Philip Prins fell 8-4 to Seo Jae Chang/Alin Zorila at the No. 1 position.
Georgia Southern won three singles matches to clinch the victory. Bekkers won 6-4, 6-4 over Zorila at the No. 2 spot. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--The Chattanooga men’s tennis team improved to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in Southern Conference play with a 6-1 win over The Citadel at the UTC Tennis Complex.
The Mocs won two of the three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to claim its 10th win the team’s last 11 matches.
The Citadel’s Daniel Dossetor won his eighth consecutive singles match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over the Mocs’ Badr Bouabdellah at the No. 1 spot. The win was the lone bright spot for the Bulldogs in singles play as the Mocs won the remaining five matches.
Mark Fynn, Peter Sauska, Razvan Axente, Tim Mittiga and Pavel Vostrikov all claimed singles wins for the Mocs. Sauska’s win was his 11th straight at the No. 3 position.
The Citadel won the opening match in doubles play with the 20th-ranked tandem of Daniel Dossetor and James Eason prevailing over Fynn and Mittiga, 8-4. Wins by Axente and Bouabdellah at No. 2 as well as Michael Hangstefer and Sauska at No. 3 rallied the Mocs to claim the doubles point.
Chattanooga will play Jacksonville State and Alabama-Huntsville Thursday at The Champions Club. Action will begin at Noon.

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. ? The College of Charleston men’s tennis team defeated Florida A&M, 6-1, at the Patriots Point Tennis Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. on Saturday.
The victory improves CofC’s record to 5-0 overall, while Florida A&M falls to 11-5.
The Cougars started the day by winning all three of the doubles matches to gain one point.
In the singles competition, Or Dekel, who’s currently ranked #112 in the nation in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Singles rankings for Division I men, improved to 5-0 on the season with an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win over Clifford Malivert of Florida A&M in the #1 singles match. CofC’s Omer Abramovich also improved his singles competitions’ record to 5-0 on the season with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over William Maussam in the #4 singles match. Justin Malina, Perry Allen and Steven Myers also won their individual matches to give the Cougars five singles wins.
The Cougars will return to action on Mar. 12 against Illinois St. at the Patriots Point Tennis Center. The start time of the match has not been determined.
