ELON, N.C. ? Elon University men’s basketball player Chris Chalko (South Bend, Ind./Marian) was today named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III University Division Basketball First Team.  This is the second year in a row that Chalko has earned this honor.
 
The squad recognizes five student-athletes from NCAA Division I institutions in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia as selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America within the district. Chalko is now eligible for consideration for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, to be announced next month.
 
A 6-8 forward, Chalko is averaging 10.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest.  He leads the team with 42 three-point field goals and sits third all-time at Elon with 180 three-pointers made.  A 2005-06 All-Southern Conference selection, Chalko is shooting 36.3 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three-point range while connecting on 24 of his 29 free throw attempts.  He is closing in on 1,000-career points, currently at 933 points. Chalko, a two-time team MVP, is 11th among Southern Conference players with 1.91 treys made a game.
 
In the classroom, Chalko completed his undergraduate work in December with a 3.69 grade-point average in exercise/sport science.  He began work on his doctorate of physical therapy in January.  Chalko, a five-time TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week, is a four-time Dean’s List and four-time President’s List honoree.  He has been named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll eight times and is a TIAA-CREF Southern Conference All-Academic Team member as well as a member of Chi Alpha Sigma honor society.
