Wofford Posts League Win Over Elon

ELON, N.C. ­ Wofford landed 10 of 11 players in the scoring column as the Terriers overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to hand Elon a 50-43 Southern Conference women’s basketball setback Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.

 

Elon never trailed in the first half. After the Terriers (11-12 overall, 5-8 Southern Conference) tied the contest at 2-2, 4-4 and 6-6, the Phoenix (9-15, 3-10) reeled off five consecutive points to go ahead 11-6 on a jumper by Tiffany Davis with 10:09 to go in the opening period.

 

Wofford answered with a 6-2 spurt to inch within 13-12 on a lay-up by Summer Nichols with 6:28 left before the intermission. Elon responded by scoring eight of the game's next 10 points to fashion a 21-14 lead on a jumper by Shashonna Moore with 2:25 remaining before the break. The Phoenix settled for a 23-16 halftime edge on a jumper by Tierra Bumbrey as time expired.

 

A put-back by Amber Wall to open the second stanza stretched the Elon edge to 25-16 with 19:19 remaining in the contest. The Terriers erupted for a 27-8 run to take over at 43-33 on a lay-up by Kelly Dwyer with 4:24 left.

 

During that stretch, a three-point field goal by Mary Joe Yee gave Wofford its first lead at 33-31 with 10:31 to play. The Terriers never trailed the rest of the evening.

 

Elon’s Nicole Allison scored a game-high 11 points while Moore put up eight points. Kelsi Koenig led Wofford with eight points and all players with eight rebounds.

 

The Terriers fired 39.6 percent (19 of 48) from the field while the Phoenix shot 32.2 percent (19 of 59) from the floor. Elon won the battle of the boards 41-33, but committed 27 turnovers to Wofford’s 24. The Terriers outscored the Phoenix 24-14 in the paint and 22-21 off turnovers.

 

The loss dropped Elon to 9-3 after leading at halftime this season with all three of those setbacks occurring in the past four contests. Wofford improved to 4-4 all-time versus the Phoenix by completing its first season sweep of the series.

 

At 5-8 against Southern Conference opponents, the Terriers have claimed their most league victories in five seasons. Wofford finished 9-9 in the 2001-02 SoCon standings.

 

The Terriers will host Furman at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Phoenix will host College of Charleston at 7 p.m. Saturday.
