Gaddy Records Two Top-10 Gold Division Finishes at Akron Open

February 3, 2007 - AKRON, Ohio ? Junior Joel Gaddy (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded two top-four performances in Gold Division events on Saturday to help lead the Appalachian State University men’s indoor track and field team at the Akron Open at the Athletics Field House.

Gaddy placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 14.45 meters (47-5.0) and added a fourth-place mark of 6.91 meters (22-8.0) in the long jump. Sophomore Ricky Harris (Durham, N.C.) finished right behind his teammate in the triple jump in fifth with a leap of 6.89 meters (22-6.25).

Also in Gold Division field events, juniors Grant Haun (Charlotte, N.C.) and Wes Kiser (Burlington, N.C.) finished back-to-back in the discus throw in fifth and sixth place with marks of 45.84 meters (150-5) and 45.19 meters (148-03), respectively.

Senior Adam Van Nortwick (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and freshman Josh Houser (Alpharetta, Ga.) recorded top-10 finishes in the Gold Division mile run. Van Nortwick placed second with a time of 4.07.44, while Houser came in seventh with a time of 4:13.72.

Sophomore Phil Mitchell (Glastonbury, Conn.) placed ninth in the Gold Division 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:26.56, while senior Brendon Helms (Matthews, N.C.) came in eighth in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:48.94.

The Mountaineers captured 11 top-10 finishes in Blue Division events.

Some Mountaineers will compete in the Valentine Open in Boone on February 8 and at the Clemson Invitational on February 10 before the Southern Conference Championships in Clemson, S.C. on February 17-18.

Wrieden Records Second-Straight Top Finish at Akron Open

February 3, 2007 - AKRON, Ohio ? Jenna Wrieden (Glendale, Ariz.) won her second-consecutive race to help lead the Appalachian State University women’s indoor track and field team at the Akron Open hosted by the University of Akron at the Athletics Field House Saturday.

Wrieden won the 3,000 meter run in the Gold Division in a time of 9:55.53, moving her into third place all-time in the ASU record books. Juniors Jennifer Povick (Charleston, WVa.) and Meghan Gaffney (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) also recorded top-five finishes in Gold Division races.

Povick placed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:16.17, while Gaffney came in fourth in the mile run with a time of 4:59.19. Povick’s time marked the fourth-best in ASU history.

Also in Gold Division track events, the Appalachian relay team of freshmen Lynda Hiller (Apex, N.C.), Chenel McFadden (Durham, N.C.) and Ashley McKiver (High Point, N.C.) and sophomore Monica Johnson (Dallas, N.C.) finished fourth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:00.78.

Junior Vonteena Knotts (Charlotte, N.C.) placed in the top seven in two Gold Division field events. Knotts finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.18 meters (36-8.25) and seventh in the long jump with a mark of 5.33 meters (17-6.0).

Also in the Gold Division long jump, freshman Danielle Thorpe (Durham, N.C.) placed fourth with a leap of 5.49 meters (18-0.25). She added a 10th-place jump of 9.95 meters (12-7.75) in the triple jump. Freshman Meg Phillips (Shallotte, N.C.) recorded her second-straight top-six finish in the high jump in fifth place with a jump of 1.63 meters (5-4.25).

Junior Lily Tallent (Cherryville, N.C.) came in fifth place in the Gold Division discus throw with a mark of 40.36 (132-5), while junior Brittani Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) rounded out the top-10 Gold Division finishers with seven place in the shot put (12.63 meters, 41-5.25).

Twelve Mountaineers added 13 top-10 finishes in Blue Division events.

Some Mountaineers will compete in the Valentine Open in Boone on February 8 and at the Clemson Invitational on February 10 before the Southern Conference Championships in Clemson, S.C. on February 17-18.

Cougars Set New Mark at Carolina Classic

The College of Charleston’s distance medley relay team set a new school record at Carolina Invitational on Saturday at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel, N.C.

 

The College of Charleston’s distance medley relay team set a new school record at Carolina Invitational on Saturday at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel, N.C.

The DMR team, which consists of Heather Clark, Lindsey Smith, Wells Trompeter and Amy Laughlin, finished 12:47.21. The foursome broke the previous mark of 12:51.93 set last weekend in Chapel Hill at the UNC Fast Times Meet.

Clark ran the 1200 meter leg in 3:52, Smith ran the 400 meter leg in :66, Trompeter ran the 800 meter leg in 2:26 and Laughlin ran the 1600 meter leg in 5:22.

Charleston’s 4X400 meter relay team finished with a time of 4:26.78. Emily Jackson ran 1:05.01, Elizabeth Sanders ran 1:07.42, Dominique Boone ran 1:02.80 and Summer Chambless ran 1:17.11.

Karen Corson had a second place finish in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 18:26.62, and Amy Laughlin had a Top 10 finish in the mile race with a time of 5:15.84.

Chambless matched the school record in the pole vault for the fourth straight time with a mark of 10-6.

College of Charleston will travel to Clemson, S.C., for the Tiger Invitational Feb. 9-10, before the Southern Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 17-18 at Clemson.

Six Place in Top 10 at Indiana Relays

 

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Nettie Halcomb placed fifth in the women's Mile Run Invitational and Tim Clark took sixth in the men's Mile Run Open Saturday at the Indiana Relays at Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Halcomb ran the event in 5:01.67, two seconds off her Southern Confernce leading time. She was five seconds out of first.

Clark finished sixth in the men's open Mile Run with a time of 4:18.66, six seconds off the league-leading time of 4:12.77 held by teammate Michael Mentz.

In the women's 3000-meter open race, Katie Williams placed seventh in the finals in a time of 10:20.15 and Emily Woods ran the 600-meter race in a time of 1:39.05 to finish eighth.

In the men's events, Michael Denahy placed eighth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:22.88 while Brandon Golder took 12th in the long jump finals leaping 6.67 meters.

The men's 4x800 meter relay team of Denahy, Clark, Michael Billingsly and Ryan Crews placed ninth at 8:00.91.

Both teams will be back in action next Saturday at the Middle Tennessee Valentine's Invitational at the Murphy Center.

Marchant Hits NCAA Provisional Time at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational

 

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Chattanooga senior Lanni Marchant placed fourth at Notre Dame Saturday afternoon inside the Loftus Sports Center, hitting the NCAA Provisional standard.

While her teammates participated in the Indiana Relays, Marchant traveled up the road from Bloomington, Ind., to compete against a larger field. The senior posted a time of 16:39.92 at the Meyo Invitational, placing fourth in a field of over 30 top runners.

Marchant's time tops the Southern Conference 5,000-meter time by more than one minute. The London, Ontario native also leads the league in the 3000-meters with a time of 9:46.24.

Jamel Brown Breaks School Record in 60m Hurdles

Chapel Hill, N.C. ? Redshirt sophomore Jamel Brown recorded the first men’s indoor school record in years as he broke the record mark in the 60m hurdles at the North Carolina Invitational. Brown recorded a time of 8.56 in the finals of the 60m hurdles to top the previous record set by current assistant coach Thomas Cummings.

 

Brown’s time of 8.56 sets a personal record as he placed 12th in the 60m hurdles. Brown topped current graduate assistant coach Thomas Cummings’ school record time of 8.57 in the 60m hurdles, set on Feb. 12, 2005 in Clemson, S.C.

 

Brown’s record breaking mark is the first men’s school record set in two years. Prior to that, Cummings broke a school record for the first time since 2002. Brown’s mark also makes the second school record set at the North Carolina Invitational and the fifth school record mark set this year.

 

Bulldog Track and Field Sets Record Day at North Carolina Invitational

 

Chapel Hill, N.C. - - Redshirt sophomore Jamel Brown recorded the first

men's indoor school record in years as he broke the record mark in the 60m hurdles at the North Carolina Invitational. Two school records were set and six marks recorded place at No. 2 on the school's record lists as The Citadel notched a record day in Chapel Hill. The Bulldogs recorded 12 personal best marks at the Eddie Smith Field House in the single day event.

 

Brown's time of 8.56 sets a personal record as he placed 12th in the 60m hurdles. Brown topped current graduate assistant coach Thomas Cummings' school record time of 8.57 in the 60m hurdles, set on Feb. 12, 2005 in Clemson, S.C.

Freshman Katheryn Gatewood continued to break records, topping her own

school record by almost two seconds in the 800m. The El Paso, Texas native finished eighth with a time of 2:20.95, besting her previous record mark of 2:22.11 which she set last weekend at the Diet Pepsi Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.

 

Redshirt senior Alexis Moore continued to set the standard for the Bulldogs with two personal record marks that are both No. 2 marks in the school record books, with another in the 4x400m relay. Moore's time of 7.93 in the 60m dash is less than 1/10 of a second away from the school record of 7.84 set by teammate Jodi Whittle.

 

Moore also set a personal record in the 200m with a time of 25.87, besting her previous mark of 26.03. That mark was set in 2004 when she was an undergraduate student at the College of Charleston and still stands as the school record at CofC. Moore was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that recorded another No. 2 mark in school history, running the relay in 4:09.03 and besting last week's mark by more than seven seconds.

 

Jamaican native Monique Edwards recorded the No. 2 mark in the school's

20lb. Weight Throw books with a mark of 47' 1.75". Edwards' mark tops her previous record best throw of 43' 8", set on Feb. 4, 2006 in the same event in Chapel Hill.

 

Three men set personal records on the day, including redshirt sophomore

Jamel Brown who tied the school's third best 60m hurdles time in school

history with a mark of 8.69. Brown won his preliminary heat as he tied Chad Case's 8.69 mark set on Feb. 14, 1997. Brown's previous best time in the 60m hurdles was 9.08 set on Jan. 14, 2006.

 

The Citadel will head to Clemson, S.C. next weekend for the Clemson

Invitational on Feb. 9-10 for the conclusion of the indoor regular season. The Cadets will compete at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships in Clemson, S.C. on Feb. 17-18, 2007 before beginning the outdoor season in March.

 

Davidson Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? The Wildcat men and women's track and field teams continued their indoor season at the Carolina Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3., hosted on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

 

Freshman Kristen Meister, who earlier in the season set a new Wildcat standard in the high jump, placed sixth in the event with a mark of 1.63 meters. Meister also finished 29th in the 200-meters with a time of 26.73.

 

Senior Douglas Noreen placed third in the mile with a time of 4:19.55, and sophomore Alex Hoyt was ninth in the event with a time of 4:22.24.

 

The women will travel to Clemson next weekend for the Clemson Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 10. The men's team will return to Chapel Hill for the Carolina Classic on Friday, Feb. 9.

Flynn, Clendenning Claim Events at UNC Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Elon University's Anna Mae Flynn and Jessica Clendenning each came away titles at the University of North Carolina Invitational women's indoor track and field meet Saturday at the Eddie Smith Field House.

Flynn finished first out of 16 participants in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 18:11.47 to shatter her own Elon record of 18:20.87 from last season. Meanwhile, Clendenning finished first out of 29 athletes in the pole vault. Her leap of 3.65 meters (11-11.75) narrowly missed her program milestone of 3.75 meters (12-03.50), set earlier this season.

In the 3,000 meters, Kaitlin Beeler placed fifth out of 24 runners with a time of 10:30.47 while Flynn crossed the line in seventh at 10:36.06. Dominique Price ended up fifth out of 40 competitors in the 60-meter hurdles, scampering to a time of 8.94 seconds in the finals after turning in a time of 8.87 seconds in the preliminaries.

Elon travels to Clemson next weekend to compete in the Tiger Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Paladins Compete at Air Force Invitational

Lady Paladins' Distance Medley Team Nabs First-Place Finish

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Furman junior Chibuzo Aguocha was the Paladins' top individual finisher at the Air Force Invitational, securing a second-place showing with her 5.59m jump in the women's long jump to earn Furman eight team points. As a team, the Lady Paladins placed seventh among the 14-team field with 39 points. Colorado State won the Invitational with 131 overall points.

The Paladins' Distance Medley team of Johnson, Sharpe, Barker and Mullen scored a first-place finish with a time of 13:36.66, earning Furman 10 team points. Mullen, Barker, Sharpe and senior Trina Small took tenth place in the 4x440 yard relay with a time of 4:10.19.

Furman had several top-five individual finishers, including freshman Brittany Johnson who took fifth in the one-mile run with a time of 5:33.18. Aguocha also placed fifth in the triple jump, recording a best mark of 11.78m. Junior Holly Stewart's time of 11:37.51 in the 3000-mter run was good for a fourth-place finish.

Senior McKenzie Sharpe was one of three Paladins to place in the top 10 of the women's 800-meter run, taking fourth place with a time of 2:18.69. Sophomore Lindsey Barker took seventh with a time of 2:27.37, and junior Rebecca Mullen finished eighth with a mark of 2:30.94.

Furman stays closer to home next weekend when it competes in the Tiger Invitational on the campus of Clemson University on Friday, Feb. 9.

Vaccaro, Rutz lead UNCG at Carolina Invitational meet

CHAPEL HILL, NC ? Nick Vaccaro and Xavier Rutz recorded Top 10 finished in the mile and Josh Wyatt logged a Top 10 in the 3000 meters to highlight UNC Greensboro’s day at the Carolina Invitational on Saturday.

 

Vaccaro, a senior from Hillsborough, NJ, was fourth in the mile with a time 4:21.44, followed closely behind by Rutz at 4:21.68.

 

Jeff Williams, who has won 800 meter races in the first two meets of the season, placed 11th in the 400 meters on Saturday, recording a time of 50.31.

 

On the women’s side, Tessa Dispenette and Naomi Damours had Top 20 finishes in the 3000 meters. Dispennette, a sophomore from Pittsboro, NC, was 14th with a time of 11:09.76, while Damours placed 17th with a time of 11:29.15.

 

UNCG returns to action in two weeks when it competes at the Southern Conference Indoor Track Championships in Clemson, SC on February 17 and 18.

Catamounts Combine for 11 Podium Finishes, Five First-Place Runs at Akron Indoor Open

Seven seasonal bests and three WCU records fall at weekend meet

Akron, Ohio - Western Carolina track & field combined for 11 podium performances, including five first-place finishes at the Akron Indoor Invitational over the weekend. The Catamounts additionally posted seven seasonal bests and broke a trio of school records at the meet.

WCU's women registered six top-three finishes, including three firsts, while the men finished in the top three five times with a pair of individual first-places.

 

Highlighting the women's performances were first-place runs by juniors Kerrie Savery in the 800 and Raquel Ramseur in the 400-meter dash. Savery set a WCU school-record with a time of 2:10.17 over two laps in the 800-meter run, while Ramseur broke a 12-year old record in the 400 with a time of 54.53. She also ran a seasonal-best time of 7.68 in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash to qualify for the finals. Her classmate, Tangelia Johnson, ran fifth in prelims and finished third in the finals (7.72).

 

Ramseur and Savery teamed with senior Asia Davis and sophomore Aneesha Lane to win the women's gold division 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:48.47.

In the women's field events, freshman Tiana Jones finished third in the blue division long jump, while junior Nicole Lopez was third in the blue weight throw with a season-best distance of 15.35m (50-4.50).

 

On the men's side, sophomore Manteo Mitchell won the 400-meter dash with a seasonal top time of 47.98. Sophomore Albert Ashcraft returned to the track to take first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.75, just nipping the four-year old WCU record (T. Alford, 6.76).

Western's 4x400-meter relay team of Mitchell, Johnson, and seniors James Gregory and Mike Malone placed second behind Ohio State with a time of 3:18.82.

From the blue division, freshman Lee Banks finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 13.72m (45-0.25).

 

Western Carolina returns to action this weekend, Feb. 9-10, at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Clemson University.
