LONGWOOD 12, WOFFORD 4

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Longwood strung together 11 runs in a third inning that included a Frank Berry grand slam en route to a 12-4 win over Wofford Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.

Wofford (1-2) jumped out to an early lead as John Brandt smashed a two-run shot over the left field fence for his second home run of the series, giving the Terriers a 2-1 lead entering the third inning. This would be the last time the Lancers trailed, however, as Tyler Childress singled in the third with the bases loaded to tie the game at 2-2. Longwood baserunner Tyler Ames tested the arm of Terrier second baseman Shane Kirkley on the play, but was gunned out at the plate on the relay from center fielder Emre Caglayan.

Longwood (2-1) continued the third-inning rally as Casey Havers drove in two runs on a single and scored two batters later on a Scott Kimble base hit up the middle. After the second pitching change of the inning, Wofford’s Zach Parmer toed the rubber with the bases loaded against Berry, who sent a shot over the left field wall to score four.

Parmer would give up two more earned runs in the third before getting a ground ball to end the inning, but did not surrender another run in his four innings of work. After the Longwood rally, Parmer gave up only two more hits while striking out two.

Longwood starter John Farrell (1-0) settled down after Wofford scored twice in the second and held the Terriers to just one more run in his six innings. Farrell faced 25 batters but gave up only four hits in his first win of the season.

The score remained 12-3 until the bottom of the seventh when Wofford’s Neil Robinette sent a shot over the right field wall for a home run in his first collegiate at bat.

Chip Hunt (0-1) took the loss for Wofford, giving up three runs over two innings before being pulled in the third.

The Terriers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 as they welcome the Dayton Flyers to Russell C. King Field for a two-game series. Both games will begin at 1 p.m.
