BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The two clubs split the singles contests, but it was No. 60 Marshall's play in the doubles matches that was the difference maker in the Thundering Herds' 4-3 victory over Davidson in women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Center. The Wildcats drop to 3-2 on the young season while Marshall improves to an identical mark.
The nationally-ranked doubles team of Kellie Schmitt and Lynzee Kever (No. 35) set the tone for the Thundering Herd defeating Davidson's Kim Whelan and Kelsey Linville, 8-1. Marshall went on to grab a 1-0 team advantage after claiming the second and third seeded doubles contests.
Also ranked among the nation's best in singles competition, Schmitt (No. 18) blanked the Wildcats' Linville in straight sets. Marshall extended its lead to 3-0 following Karolina Soor's 6-1, 6-4 win over Michele Fanney at the second-seeded singles spot.
Trailing 3-0 in the dual, Davidson cut into the deficit thanks to freshman Virginia Berry's triumph over Kever, but the Thundering Herd's Thaddea Lock put the match out of reach with her three-set win over Whelan.
Teresa Wang (3-6, 7-6, 6-3) and Lora Dushanova (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) also recorded victories for the Wildcats this afternoon at the fourth and sixth spots, respectively.
Davidson returns home for a pair of matches against Radford (9 a.m.) and Queens (3 p.m.) Saturday, Feb. 10.
