SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Wofford senior Austin Redwine threw a complete game five-hitter and struck out five in leading the Terriers to a 3-1 win in their baseball season opener Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.
Longwood’s Paul Heidler knocked in three runs and scored twice to give the Lancers a 6-2 win in the night cap.
Redwine needed just 82 pitches to record his 14th career victory as a Terrier.
Senior leftfielder John Brandt staked the Terriers to a 1-0 lead with a solo homer to left leading off the second inning. Wofford added a run in the fourth when Emre Caglayan singled, moved to third on a single by Sterling Dye and scored when Dye was intentionally picked off of first base.
The Terriers added a single run in the fifth when Brandon Waring was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single by Mike Gilmartin and scored on a ground ball in the infield by Brandt.
Brandt finished the opener with two hits and two RBIs to lead the Wofford offense. Freshman Kyle Behrendt of Greenwood, SC also had a pair of hits in his collegiate debut. First baseman Adam Wood also collected a pair of hits.
Heidler went 2-for-3 during the nightcap with a pair of doubles, the first of which came in the first inning to drive in Zach Zigrang to give Longwood a quick 1-0 lead. Heidler blasted a shot down the right field line and advanced to second on a throwing error. He scored a batter later when Jon Quigley singled up the middle.
Wofford answered in the bottom of the second when catcher Adam Kearney doubled off the right field wall and scored on a single by Wood. Later in the inning, Wood scored on a throwing error by Longwood shortstop Frank Berry.
Longwood reclaimed the lead in the fourth when pinch hitter Tyler Childress hit a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in Heidler and gave the Lancers a 3-2 lead.
Longwood reliever Needham Jones came in to close out the final two innings and held the Terriers scoreless and hitless for the remainder of the game. Longwood added another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh on Heidler’s second double to cement the victory and split the doubleheader.
Ben Austin took the loss for the Terriers in his first start of the season. The Terriers managed just four basehits in the game.
Wofford (1-1) and Longwood (1-1) will conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
