Chattanooga Grabs Win at Belmont and Davidson and Georgia Southern Fall in Non-League Action

STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team dropped their second match of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 5-2 to Jacksonville.

 

Emma Knight pulled out the lone victory for the Eagles.  In No. 5 singles, Knight came back after losing her first set 6-0 and ended up winning 0-6, 6-3, 10-4 over Cristina Paiva-Flor.

 

The No. 1 singles slot saw Molly Maddox fall 6-0,

6-1 to Emese Sulyos.  In No. 2 singles, Kristi Kegerreis fell to Lena Willi 6-1, 6-1.  Heather Reynolds lost in the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-0 to Tatiana Soldatova.  Frenanda Carerro defeated Shea Huxtable 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in No. 4 singles.  In No. 6 singles, Lauren Wolken won by default after Iva Jaresova suffered an injury.

 

In doubles action all three GSU doubles pairs lost.  Kegerreis/Reynolds fell 8-3 to Sulyos/Jaresova in the No. 1 slot.  Maddox/Christine Caforio lost 8-3 to Willi/Carerro at No. 2 and Jessica Matlosz/Jessica Fuller fell 8-6 to Soldatova/Paiva-Flor.

 

The Eagles will resume action Feb. 10 at the Hanner Fieldhouse Courts as Georgia State comes to town.  Match time is set for noon.

NASHVILLE --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team evened its record at 1-1 Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Belmont.

 

The abbreviated match featured four singles matches and one doubles match as opposed to the usual three doubles matches and six singles matches.

 

UTC’s Anastasia Zhukova, ranked No. 23 nationally, returned to the court after missing the season opener at Kentucky last week because of an illness.  She made short work of Raphaela Jann at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

 

Lindsey Ballard and Bonnie Adams also registered singles wins, giving UTC the team victory.  Ballard defeated Erin Moakler at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4, and Adams was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Olivia Ellis at No. 4.

 

The Bison (0-2) scored their points with a win at No. 3 singles and a doubles victory.  Emily Ellis beat Beata Knizat at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8, and the team of Casey Hall and Caitlin Khouri notched a 6-1, 6-2 doubles win over Samantha Duggan and Kate Ksiezopolski.

 

UTC was scheduled to take on Belmont late Saturday night.

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The No. 27 Virginia women's tennis team improved to

3-1 on the season with a 7-0 win over the Davidson women's tennis team on Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club. Davidson dropped its first match of the season, falling to 3-1.

 

Against the Wildcats, the Cavaliers swept the doubles with Kristen McVitty and Jennifer Stevens winning at No. 1 over Kelsey Linville and Kim Whelan.

Maggie Yahner and Lindsey Pereira secured the doubles point with an 8-1 win over Davidson's Michele Fanney and Lora Dushanova.

 

Virginia then swept every one of the six singles matches, all in straight sets. The Wildcats' Virginia Berry scored the most games, falling 7-6, 6-2 to Maggie Yahner at No. 3 singles, but not other 'Cat scored more than two games in any of their sets.

 

Davidson stays in West Virginia to play No. 60 Marshall on Sunday at 12 p.m.
