Cougars Get Come-From-Behind Victory Over Liberty

KENNESAW, Ga. - The College of Charleston softball team had a come-from-behind victory over Liberty at the Kennesaw State Invitational on Sunday in Kennesaw, Ga.

 

The Cougars (6-8) defeated Liberty, 5-4 - their first win over the Flames since the series began in 1996.

 

The Flames (4-2) got on board early as Liberty scored two runs in the first inning, before Katie Pesature got the Cougars' first hit of the game - a double to center - in the bottom of the third.  Izmena Cabrera's double to center would score Pesature.

 

Liberty would add a pair of runs in the fourth to give the Flames a 4-1 lead.  Jennifer Golden's two -run homer got the Cougars within one, 4-3, before Shannon Howard hit a double and eventually scored a passed ball and Amber Shifflett's RBI-single scored Katie Sansouci who walked.

 

Ashley Williams, Dawn Jeffs and Jessica Moore led Liberty at the plate on 2-for-4 hitting.  Jeffs and Williams scored a run, and Jeffs had an RBI.  Terra Lowe (0-2) gave up six hits and five runs with four strikeouts for the loss.

 

Golden led the Cougars offensively on 1-for-3 hitting, including her third home run this season.  Katie Sansouci, through 3 1/3 innings of work, allowed one hit, a walk and two strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season.

 

College of Charleston plays host Kennesaw State at 4 p.m. today.

 

                                   

 

Kennesaw State Tops Cougars, 7-1

KENNESAW, Ga. - Katie Pesature's first career home run wasn't enough to lift the College of Charleston over host Kennesaw State in softball action at the Kennesaw State Invitational on Sunday afternoon in Kennesaw, Ga.

 

The Owls improved to 12-5 with their 7-1 win, and the Cougars fell to 6-9 on the season.

 

Kennesaw State's hit parade was led by Huffman who went 2-for-2 at the plate with one run scored, followed by Keasler who was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI.  Weller, who was 1-for-2 at the plate, scored two runs.

 

Missy Hobdy gave up five hits and a run, while striking out three in 5 1/3 innings of work to improve to 3-0 in the circle.

 

Izmena Cabrera went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Cougars's offense, and Shannon Howard and Pesature went 1-for-3.

 

Shannon Howard fell to 1-5 in the circle, after giving up seven hits on six runs.  Katie Sansouci came in at the top of the fourth and gave up three hits, a run and stuck out three.

 

College of Charleston will travel to South Carolina State on Mar. 3 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Bulldogs.  Kennesaw State will host Georgia State on Feb. 28.

 

 

 

LADY MOCS FINISH SECOND AT PANERA BREAD CHALLENGE; DEFEAT MIAMI (OHIO)

Chattanooga, Tenn. ? Sophomore Laci Upchurch (Madison, Tenn.) hit a lead off solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the Lady Mocs’ 4-3 win over Miami of Ohio Sunday afternoon.

 

Chattanooga (6-6) finished second in the 2007 Panera Bread Challenge to Bowling Green based on the third deciding criteria of total runs scored. The teams did not play each other and had the same number of runs scored against them (3).

 

Senior Alyssa Edwards (Geneva, N.Y.) extended her hitting streak to four games with two singles in three at bats improving her batting average on the season to .406 to lead the team.

 

Freshman pitcher Brooke Loudermilk (Locust Grove, Ga.) earned her fourth win of the season tallying eight strikeouts on 32 batters faced.

 

The RedHawks (6-8) struck first in the top of the second off of a Breanna Robinson lead off home run and was followed by a Briana Burke lead off home run in the fourth.

 

Chattanooga answered with senior Jeannie Cochran (Maryville, Tenn.) scoring in the bottom of the third off of Ashley Cuticchia’s (Rising Fawn, Ga.) double to right center.

 

Senior Brittney Whittier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored the second run for the Lady Mocs in the bottom of the fifth. That was followed by Upchurch’s home run and Cuticchia’s run in the sixth on one of Edward’s singles.

 

Miami was led by Burke and Alexis Javier with two hits. Burke also added two RBIs.

 

The Lady Mocs host non-conference opponent UAB on Tuesday evening in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Frost Stadium.

 

 

 

SOFTBALL WINS TWICE AT EAGLE CLASSIC
STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern softball team defeated Lipscomb 6-2 and Savannah State 9-0 to complete an undefeated run at the GSU Eagle Classic Sunday at Eagle Field.
 
GSU evens its record at 7-7.  In the first game of the day Lipscomb (9-3) defeated Savannah State (0-7) 20-0.

Georgia Southern scored four runs in the second and used a dominating relief appearance from senior Logan Free (Sandpoint, Idaho) to win the opener 6-2.
 
The Eagles got half their runs on wild pitches and the other half from freshman Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) who hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left.
 
Lipscomb cut the lead in half with runs in the second and third, but the Eagles padded their advantage with runs in the fifth and seventh, the last off the bat of freshman Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.).
 
Free came out of the bullpen and pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.  She improves to 3-2 on the season.  The Lady Bisons' Kim Jacobson allowed five hits and five earned runs, and falls to 2-2.

Junior Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada) faced the minimum and struck out nine while sophomore Michelle Beasley (Metter, Ga.) and freshman Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) each had three hits as the Eagles completed their undefeated run this weekend with a 9-0 win over Savannah State.
 
Side doubled home two runners in the first and Georgia Southern added four more in the second.  Four different batters drove in runs in the inning.
 
Beasley recorded her first career homer in the fourth and Russo and junior Aubrey Thweatt (Georgia, Vt.) added RBI singles.
