Davidson Completes Sweep of Georgetown in Baseball Action

DAVIDSON 6, GEORGETOWN 3

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? On the strength of a five-run second and five solid innings on the mound from Mac Read, the Davidson Wildcats defeated visiting Georgetown on Monday afternoon at Wilson Field, 6-3. Davidson (3-0) swept the three-game series from the Hoyas (0-3), tying a school record with 42 runs in the series.

Read, a freshman from Lumberton, N.C., threw 88 pitches in his first collegiate pitching assignment, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks while fanning three. In the first inning, he showed signs of first-game jitters, allowing a lead-off single and walking two batters, but he helped himself by picking a runner off second and escaped with just one unearned runs scoring.

Davidson took advantage of three Hoya errors in the second to put five runs on the board. Senior Gregory Zage drew a one-out walk and fellow senior Blake Osborn doubled him to third. Sophomore Chris FitzPatrick also walked to load the bases, but Hoya hurler Jimmy Saris appeared to get out of the jam when senior Doug Grunwald hit a hard grounder to short. After stepping on the bag, the shortstop threw low to first for an error, allowing two runs to score.

The Wildcats did not waste the opportunity to tack on more runs as sophomore Brett Shore laced a single to right that went under the fielder’s glove, allowing Shore to scamper to third and Grunwald to score. Sophomore Zach Kayne followed with an RBI single, then promptly stole second and went to third on a throwing error. The final run came on an RBI single by sophomore Matt Webb.

In the fourth, Georgetown came up with a couple runs, the first a solo home run by Sean Baumann, his third blast in as many games. Matthew Maranges then doubled, and Mark McLaughlin brought him home with a clean single to right one out later.

Davidson got its sixth run in the fifth on a lead-off double by senior Alden Crissey, a grounder to second and a sacrifice fly by Zage.

From the there, the Wildcat bullpen took over. Freshman Chris Kennedy tossed a scoreless sixth, junior Bobby DeMuro crafted two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts, and Webb earned his second save with a shutout ninth.

Kayne, Crissey and Shore each had two hits for Davidson to lead the nine-hit attack.

Georgetown managed just seven safeties in the contest, two each by McLaughlin and Joe Silvestri. In addition, the Hoyas swiped 11 bases on the afternoon, but rarely could take advantage of the extra bases.

Saris (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding six runs, four earned, on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Davidson returns to the diamond on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when Ohio University comes to town. Next up for the Hoyas is St. Joseph’s in a three-game series at home, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
